This provisional Biogeographic Analysis Package provides an analysis of protection status for ecological systems within Omernik Level III Ecoregions. The ecological system classification defines groups of plant communities that tend to co-occur within landscapes with similar ecological processes, substrates, and/or environmental gradients and is the primary map class used in the Gap Analysis Program (GAP) land cover layer (based on 2001 satellite imagery). Uses direct output files of Aquatic Gap Analysis Program (AGAP) fish distribution models and National Fish Habitat Partnership (NFHP) 2010 Habitat Condition Indicies (HCI) to make summarized conclusions of stream condition and fish biological potential for Level 3 Ecoregions across the Conterminous United States (CONUS). These descriptions were primarily written by NatureServe ecologists in collaboration with Federal Geographic Data Committee Vegetation Subcommittee and a wide variety of state, federal and private partners as a part of the implementation of the National Vegetation Classification. Formation descriptions were written by the Hierarchy Revisions Working Group. The descriptions are based on consultation with natural resource professionals, published literature, and other vegetation classification systems. The Aquatic Gap Project represents the portion of the USGS Gap Analysis Project that focuses on aquatic species found in coastal and inland waters. The goal of the National Aquatic GAP is to evaluate aquatic biological diversity and habitats using spatial analysis and species distribution models to identify gaps in species protection or threats to habitats in order to work toward more effective conservation planning and prioritization. Our current efforts are focused on modeling the rangewide distribution of fish species which are wide ranging, non-habitat specialist, and of specific interest to our natural resource management agency and conservation partners.

Researchers from North Carolina State University and the USGS integrated models of urbanization and vegetation dynamics with the regional climate models to predict vegetation dynamics and assess how landscape change could impact priority species, including North American land birds. This integrated ensemble of models can be used to predict locations where responses to climate change are most likely to occur, expressing results in terms of species persistence to help resource managers understand the long-term sustainability of bird populations.
Expert knowledge-based species-habitat relationships are used extensively to guide conservation planning, particularly when data are scarce. Purported relationships describe the initial state of knowledge, but are rarely tested. We assessed support in the data for suitability rankings of vegetation types based on expert knowledge for three terrestrial avian species in the South Atlantic Coastal Plain of the United States. This is an experimental collection that implements an information model for biogeographic information. We are building this on the conceptual foundation from the Global Change Information System. We are using the Biogeographic Information System, accessed via the ScienceBase API, as a basis to drive an experimental new map interface (National Biogeographic Map) and a developing iterative report concept (National Biodiversity Assessment).

Unfortunately, many of these ecosystems are increasingly under threat due to rapid human development, and management agencies are increasingly aware of the potential effects that climate change will have on these ecosystems. The Gap Analysis Project (GAP) is a core activity of the Biogeographic Characterization Branch. GAP produces and manages a set of species habitat distribution maps based on the 30-meter GAP land cover product. GAP species and subspecies are best represented within another ScienceBase collection that documents and houses the 2001 release of CONUS habitat maps. The items in that collection provide essential details for the TIR process within their identifiers (species names, GAP identifiers, ITIS TSN, and other related identifiers).
