The data products in this collection were produced from the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) 2.1 dataset. The derivative products include data downloads for non-national extents of the PAD-US geodatabse (e.g., States and DOI Regions), a Topology Overlap Assessment to identify inconsistencies between agency land ownership datasets, SD files for the production of web services, and national and state poster maps (in review).
PAD-US poster maps are available to increase awareness of PAD-US and aid user interpretation. The maps provide a general overview of management, not ownership, as Federal and other designated areas may overlap state, private, and other inholdings. The maps include U.S. States only (not Territories) based on the PAD-US 2.1 Combined Proclamation (Tribal areas and military lands are provided for context), Marine, Fee, Designation, Easement feature class, published by the USGS Science Analytics and Synthesis (SAS), Gap Analysis Project (GAP). The All Managers and Federal Managers maps illustrate the land or marine management agency. The Protection Status map depicts GAP Status Code (a measure of management intent to...

The Crystal Darter (Crystallaria asprella) requires large, clear-water streams with clean sand and gravel bottoms and moderate to swift currents. It is intolerant of siltation and other forms of pollution from various land use practices. Direct habitat degradation from damming, channelization, and dredging has also reduced habitat for this species. Remaining populations have become isolated from one another by dams and impoundments. The Mississippi River most likely no longer serves as a usable corridor for the Crystal Darter because of the silt load. The isolated local populations are then vulnerable to single destructive events such as toxic chemical spills.
