Groundwater, soil pore water, and surface water were collected in and near wetland P1 in the Cottonwood Lake Study Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota in August 2013. Groundwater was collected from established wells (17, 18, and 22) via peristaltic pump. Surface water was collected from P1 ponded water via grab sample. Soil pore water was collected using drive point samplers and one suction lysimeter. Water samples were analyzed for pH and major ion chemistry.
The Powell Center serves as a catalyst for innovative thinking in earth system science research by providing scientists from different backgrounds a place and time to focus on multi-faceted issues. The Powell Center is a scientist-driven institution where leveraging existing research efforts produces powerful new insights and moves scientific understanding and its inclusion into management forward at an accelerated pace. Executive Summary The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has a long history of advancing the traditional Earth science disciplines and identifying opportunities to integrate USGS science across disciplines to address complex societal problems. The USGS science strategy for 2007-2017 laid out key challenges in disciplinary and interdisciplinary arenas, culminating in a call for increased focus on a number of crosscutting science directions. This proposal brings together biologists and geoscientists to evaluate the evolution of stress tolerance and adaptation to extreme environments in plants. Stress tolerance has been studied mainly from a physiological perspective using laboratory and field experiments. In contrast, this project will take a combined environmental and evolutionary perspective using national public databases and a “big data” approach. Thus the proposal will illustrate an application of spatially integrated big datasets for basic research, a synthesis goal of the Powell Center. Through a resampling of 178 prairie lakes and wetlands originally sampled in the late 1960s and early 1970s, we are exploring changes in water chemical composition that have occurred in response to shifting climate patterns and the affects of these changes on fish and wildlife communities.
