These data sets present results from the analyses of groundwater samples collected from monitoring wells and monitoring intervals in bedrock wells in the mudstone aquifer underlying the former Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC), West Trenton, NJ. The water samples were collected between 2008 and 2013 and were analyzed for field parameters, inorganic and organic constituents, and the abundances of selected microbes of importance to the evaluation of biological degradation of organic contaminants in groundwater. The collection and analyses of the groundwater samples coincides with conducting a bioaugmentation experiment in a targeted region of the mudstone aquifer. The purpose of the bioaugmentation was to introduce...

Characterizing Groundwater Flow and Chemical Transport in Fractured Rock From Meters to Kilometers: The objectives of my research are to develop a conceptual understanding of geologic, geochemical, and biological processes that affect groundwater flow and chemical transport in complex geologic settings, such as fractured rock and karst aquifers, and to test hypotheses under field scale conditions. Because the geologic complexity of fractured rock and karst aquifers can manifest itself differently over increasingly larger physical dimensions, the formulation of hypotheses and the design of field scale experiments are undertaken over physical dimensions that range from meters to kilometers.

Simulations of one-dimensional (1-D) diffusion and adsorption of trichloroethene (TCE) in a rock matrix are conducted using rock properties identified from a mudstone aquifer in the Newark Basin, near West Trenton, New Jersey. The simulations are conducted using a finite-difference algorithm that was prepared for this investigation to solve the equation for 1-D diffusion and linear equilibrium adsorption. The simulations are conducted for a hypothesized 1-D section of a rock matrix and the georeferencing is based on the locations of the rock core samples that were collected and analyzed as part of this investigation. The rock matrix is assumed to be adjacent to a fracture, where the TCE concentration in the fracture...

This data set presents the lithologic interpretation of rock cores from boreholes 83BR-89BR collected from the mudstone aquifer underlying the Naval Air Warfare Center (NAWC), West Trenton, NJ. Continuous core from these boreholes was collected and visually interpreted to identify characteristics of the depositional environment of the mudstone. Three types of mudstone were identified: a black-fissile mudstone (BLK-FIS); a gray-laminated mudstone (GRY-LAM); and a gray massive mudstone (GRY-MAS). The BLK-FIS mudstone is associated with a deep-water depositional environment. The GRY-MAS mudstone is associated with a shallow-water depositional environment. The GRY-LAM mudstone is associated with a transitional depositional...

The algorithms and input data included in this data release are used to interpret time-series data (water- table altitude, precipitation, and potential evapotranspiration) over an observation period to estimate model parameters of a State-Space (SS) model of vertical infiltration to a fractured-rock aquifer. The SS model is coupled with a Kalman Filter (KF) to estimate system states (water-table altitude and groundwater recharge) over the observation period and forecast beyond the end of the observation period. This SS/KF model is formulated for one-dimensional vertical infiltration and includes preferential and diffuse flow through the unsaturated zone to the water table. The analysis was conducted to demonstrate...
