These data were generated for a cooperative project created by an agreement between the Federal Lands and Highways, Central Federal Lands Division (FLH-CFL) and the USGS Fort Collins Science Center (Colorado; https://www.fort.usgs.gov/) to facilitate development of spatially explicit natural resources and socioeconomic information for utilization during comprehensive transportation planning efforts. Federal Lands Highways (FLH) is the federal agency that helps guide and support transportation planning at national, regional, and state levels, including providing funding, information, and tools to state transportation planners. FLH is currently undertaking a series of pilot studies aimed at improving the availability,...

Identifying ecologically relevant reference sites is important for evaluating ecosystem recovery, but the relevance of references that are temporally static is unclear in the context of vast landscapes with varying disturbance and environmental contexts over space and time. This question is pertinent for landscapes dominated by sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) which face a suite of threats from disturbance and development but also have lengthy recovery times. Here, we applied a dynamic reference approach to studying and projecting recovery of sagebrush on former oil and gas well pads in southwest Wyoming, USA, using over 3 decades of remote sensing data (1985-2018). We also used quantile regression to evaluate factors...

Management of transportation networks is affected by, and has effects on, natural and cultural resources through direct and indirect interactions. Until recently, the availability of such spatially explicit information has been limited; however, the data released here to the public will prove valuable for comparing existing networks and planning options with respect to potential impact to, or from, environmental factors across broad areas, for example, States and Agency Planning Regions. Integrated network and resource analyses can provide insights into potential construction and maintenance costs as well as safety risks and environmental impacts during project planning and assessment. A cooperative project was...

The Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GPLCC, https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog) is a partnership that provides applied science and decision support tools to assist natural resource managers conserve plants, fish and wildlife in the mid- and short-grass prairie of the southern Great Plains. It is part of a national network of public-private partnerships — known as Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs, http://www.fws.gov/science/shc/lcc.html) — that work collaboratively across jurisdictions and political boundaries to leverage resources and share science capacity. The Great Plains LCC identifies science priorities for the region and helps foster science that addresses these priorities to support...
