The Department of the Interior and the U.S. Geological Survey have made it a priority to train the next generation of scientists and resource managers. The Climate Adaptation Science Centers (CASCs) and consortium institutions are working to contribute to this initiative by building and supporting a network of students across the country who are interested in the climate sciences and climate adaptation. The abstract, complex nature of climate change poses a number of challenges for scientists and other communicators interested in engaging diverse audiences with the issue. A number of new web-based platforms provide opportunities for more effective communication as well as network- and relationship-building among scientists, advocates and interested citizens. In this seminar, I will present some of the new platforms that I and others associated with the NECSC have been developing over the past year as well as highlight their potential to advance communication efforts.
Abstract (from Weather, Climate, and Society): Online science communities can serve as powerful platforms for advancing scientific knowledge, capacity, and outreach by increasing collaboration and information sharing among geographically distant peers, practitioners, and the public. Here, we examine the value and role of the Early Career Climate Forum (ECCF), a climate-focused online science community that is based in the United States and is dedicated to training and providing support to the next generation of climate scientists.
