We propose a collaborative project with the USGS, Wyoming State Climate Office, USFWS, USFS, and the NPS whereby we will assemble and maintain long-term records of climate from key stations in and around the Great Northern LCC and subject these records to a rigorous series of QA/QC procedures. Where appropriate we will use best available practices to infill missing data, and we will develop station histories (e.g., details of station moves, instrumentation changes, etc.) as a context for interpreting these records. We will then rigorously analyze patterns of long-term (50-100 years) variability and trends in these datasets, and provide summaries designed to meet the needs of non-climate specialists working in the...

The climate of the North Central U.S. is driven by a combination of factors, including atmospheric circulation patterns, the region’s complex topography which extends from the High Rockies to the Great Plains, and variations in hydrology. Together, these factors determine the sustainability of the region’s ecosystems and the services that they provide communities. In order to understand the vulnerability of the region’s ecosystems to change, it is necessary to have reliable projections of future climate conditions. To address this need, researchers first examined past and present variations in climate and assessed the ability of climate models to effectively project future climate conditions for the region. Second,...

We propose to work with the Rocky Mountain Partnership Forum to expand upon the successful approach applied in the first two years of this project to help managers incorporate climate change science into their natural resource management decisions for a new resource of interest that will be chosen by the Rocky Mountain Partner Forum members. This project will be implemented through the Rocky Mountain Partner Forum to share information with and among partners about emerging climate science and strategies for integrating climate change into natural resource management decisions in the region. We will also support the Rocky Mountain Partner Forum Leadership Team as it seeks to formalize the Forum and set directions...

We propose a regional assessment of aquatic species vulnerabilities and responses to climate change as the basis for adaptive management for aquatic ecosystems in the Great Northern LCC, using the Transboundary Flathead Ecosystem as a case example. This region encompasses a complex mix of federal, state, tribal, and private lands in the US and federal, provincial and private lands in Canada. The complex suite of ownerships, international relations, and agency objectives establish their own set of challenges; however, all will experience a similar range of climatic (e.g., long-term drought and declining snow pack) and non-climatic (e.g., habitat fragmentation, shifting land- and water use patterns, and invasive species)...
