These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, an estimated 258 million people nationwide, or 86% of the U.S. population, relied on public water supplies for their household use in 2005 (USGS, 2013). The remaining population obtains their water from different sources, such as a domestic self-supply well. However, the spatial distribution of water supply systems has not been compiled. Mapping where these people are located can be done within...

In the Chenango River Basin, New York, glacial valley-fill unconfined and confined aquifers are an important source of drinking-water supplies. The U.S. Geological Survey developed three-dimensional groundwater-flow models (MODFLOW-NWT code) of three study areas in the basin to improve understanding of groundwater flow and delineate areas contributing recharge to 16 production wells as part of an effort to protect the source of water to these wells. The modeled areas were the Cortland study area in Cortland County (CCSA), Greene study area (GSA), and the Cincinnatus study area (CSA). Production wells in CCSA tap unconfined aquifers, whereas the production wells in GSA and CSA are screened in confined aquifers. The...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is providing online maps of water-table and potentiometric-surface altitude in the upper glacial, Magothy, Jameco, Lloyd, and North Shore aquifers on Long Island, New York, April–May 2016. Also provided is a depth-to-water map for Long Island, New York, April–May 2016. The USGS makes these maps and geospatial data available as REST Open Map Services (as well as HTTP, JSON, KML, and shapefile), so end-users can consume them on mobile and web clients. A companion report, U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 3398 (Como and others, 2018; https://doi.org/10.3133/sim3398) further describes data collection and map preparation and presents 68x22 in. Portable Document...
