This project will apply the results of an on-going climate change vulnerability assessment to the management of two complex landscapes. The vulnerability assessment project team will work with mangers, land-owners, and conservation practitioners to explore 1) how downscaled climate datasets, modeled vegetation changes, and information on estimated species sensitivities can be used to develop climate change adaptation strategies, and 2) how model results and datasets can be made more useful for informing the management of species and landscapes. Climate change is already affecting species in many ways. Because individual species respond to climate change differently, some will be adversely affected by climate change whereas others may benefit. Successfully managing species in a changing climate will require an understanding of which species will be most and least impacted by climate change. Although several approaches have been proposed for assessing the vulnerability of species to climate change, it is unclear whether these approaches are likely to produce similar results. The U.S. Northern Rocky Mountains support a large number of native wildlife species, and survival of these populations depends on connected landscapes to support current migration and dispersal, as well as future shifts in species’ ranges. However, habitat fragmentation and loss threaten these connections. Land and wildlife managers across the U.S. are faced with decisions focused on reducing risks, like those from habitat fragmentation, to wildlife, ecosystems, and landscapes. This project will develop a range-wide distribution map for pygmy rabbits through compilation and synthesis of existing presence-absence data and development of a predictive MaxEnt model. The proposed work would evaluate how well sage-grouse habitat conservation also supports landscapes inhabited by pygmy rabbits at both regional and range-wide scales, and this information can be used to inform integrated habitat conservation, restoration, and management that targets both of these sagebrush obligates. It is part of a larger intensive sage-grouse and pygmy rabbit distribution and habitat use study in Idaho supported by BLM, Forest Service and Idaho Department of Fish and Game.
