The goal of the Jornada is to develop ecologically based knowledge systems and technologies for management, conservation, monitoring, and assessment of western rangelands. Our longterm research objective is to increase understanding of the fundamental relationships among management practices, ecological processes, and climatic variability to improve rangeland production, conservation, and restoration. Two key challenges for expanding rangeland capacities are sustaining production while maintaining desirable conditions and restoring capacities of degraded rangelands. For rangelands to achieve their full potential in meeting food security and other ecosystem services objectives, appropriate practices for use, conservation,...

The Gap Analysis Project (GAP) is an element of the U.S. Geological Survey. GAP helps to implement the Department of the Interior’s goals of inventory, monitoring, research, and information transfer. GAP has three primary goals: Identify conservation gaps that help keep common species common; Provide conservation information to the public so that informed resource management decisions can be made; and Facilitate the application of GAP data and analysis to specific resource management activities. To implement these goals, GAP carries out the following objectives: Map the land cover of the United States Map predicted distributions of vertebrate species for the U.S. Map the location, ownership and stewardship of...

Water resource managers rely on hydrologic planning and decision-making models to understand and evaluate current and future water operations in the face of endangered species needs, drought, and climate change. Current climate change projections, such as those used in the West-Wide Climate Risk Assessment programs, are trending toward more extreme instances of drought within the Southern Rockies LCC region. Accurately estimating agricultural water consumption both under present conditions and under modeled future scenarios will help water resource managers project how much water might be available for allocation toward current ecological projects. It will also improve their understanding of the challenges a more...
