National-Scale Geophysical, Geologic, and Mineral Resource Data and Grids for the United States, Canada, and Australia: Data in Support of the Tri-National Critical Minerals Mapping Initiative
National-scale geologic, geophysical, and mineral resource raster and vector data covering the United States, Canada, and Australia are provided in this data release. The data were compiled as part of the tri-national Critical Minerals Mapping Initiative (CMMI). The CMMI, established in 2019, is an international science collaboration between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Geoscience Australia (GA), and the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC). One aspect of the CMMI is to use national- to global-scale earth science data to map where critical mineral prospectivity may exist using advanced machine learning approaches (Kelley, 2020). This compilation contains a list of approximately 8,600 sites across the United States, Canada, and Australia where Zn-Pb-mineralized rock is attributed to basinal brine-related mineralizing processes, specifically assigned to Mississippi Valley Type (MVT) or clastic-dominated (CD) deposit types; a second group of 147 sites, classified as “unknown”, but which may have similar genesis, is also included. These sites were selected based on interpretations of 16 published databases, including the Mineral Resources Data System (USGS, 2016) and the Alaska Resource Data File (USGS, 1996) for the United States, and comprise a significant but not necessarily complete dataset. This dataset contains 99 electron microprobe analyses of cassiterite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, sphalerite, and tetrahedrite from seven Sheep Creek drill core samples and one outcrop; and a table that describes the textures, mineralogy, and rock type of 15 thin sections of Sheep Creek drill core and observations from our study and from drill core logging by industry. These data were used to compare this prospect with others in the Bonnifield district.
