As the impacts and risks from climate change increase, the climate assessment landscape has expanded in scope and application, resulting in the desire for more information relevant to local decision-making. Some regions lack detailed climate projections and a body of consensus findings about sector-specific impacts, and there is a need for actionable, culturally cognizant, translated climate information suitable for integration into operations and management, budgeting, funding proposals, and domestic and international policy. Haleakalā National Park (HNP) and the surrounding landscape spans many different land cover types, some of which are undergoing vegetation changes that can reduce the amount of water that infiltrates into soil. Decreased soil infiltration can lead to the erosion of terrestrial habitats, increases in the amount of sediment entering aquatic habitats, and flooding of downstream areas as runoff increases after storms. The Hawai‘i Drought Knowledge Exchange project has been successfully piloting three sets of formal collaborative knowledge exchanges between researchers and managers to co-produce customized, site specific drought data products to meet the needs of their partners. Through these pilots, knowledge co-production has demonstrated how active collaboration between researchers and managers in the design and production of data products can lead to more useful and accessible applications for drought planning and management. High-resolution projections of future terrestrial climate conditions for the high Hawaiian islands (Hawaiʻi Island, Maui Nui, Oʻahu, and Kauaʻi) have been developed using statistical and dynamical downscaling methods. A “Workshop on Climate Downscaling and its Application in the High Hawaiian Islands” (https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/publication/ofr20161102) was held in 2015 to address questions from natural resource managers about how to integrate climate-related projections into their resource management decisions.
