Purpose

The objective of the data collection was to determine whether Hawaiian hoary bats seen flying at close range produced detectable echolocation calls and if not, why. We examined flight behavior and acoustic characteristics to determine whether bats seen but not heard briefly stopped echolocating or engaged in behavior that may have resulted in not detecting them acoustically.
