Summary

This Sediment Analysis dataset, a conceptual subgroup of the Lake Erie Ecological Investigations (LEEI) dataset, focuses on the sediments sampled at Areas of Concern (AOCs) on Lake Erie. Per the Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP), sediment collections were a composite of at least five randomly selected samples collected from each site. Per an internal summary report, sediment samples were collected using a stainless steel Eckman dredge. Analytical methods and QA/QC were directed by the Patuxent Analytical Control Facility (PACF) of the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Per Dora Passino-Reader, the Geochemical & Environmental Research Group at Texas A&M University, College Station performed the analytical chemistry using PACF lab procedures. [...]

Purpose

This dataset details the concentrations of contaminants measured in sediments at nine AOCs and two reference sites. These measured concentrations from 1998-2000 evaluation can be compared with the concentrations measured at four of the same sites in the Stephen B. Smith et al. historical study from 1986-87 (Smith et al. 1994). The data collected as part of the LEEI evaluations have been used to ascertain whether remedial activities and contaminant reductions had been successful for AOCs on Lake Erie. In future work, the techniques established in the LEEI reevaluation can be used to monitor trends in the Lake Erie ecosystem over the long term. The LEEI dataset can serve as a foundational data source, when used in comparison to future data collections, for analyzing the long-term success or not of contaminant reductions and impacts.
