Summary

This shapefile describes the canopy status and distribution of of ohia (Metrosideros polymorpha) forests on the eastern side of the island relative to a landscape-scale canopy dieback that impacted this area in the 1970s.

Purpose

The upland plant communities on the island of Hawaii were mapped using photo-interpretation of aerial imagery taken in 1977. These maps were used as a habitat base for evaluating the status of forest bird communities on that island as part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Hawaii Forest Bird Survey (HFBS). The map units include information that describes the tree canopy height, tree cover, dominant tree species composition, understory composition and habitat status for the study area.
