The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology (NBMG) Mining District Files (also known as NVGEODEX) is a collection containing over 30,000 items consisting of about 150,000 pages of correspondence, reports, maps, assays, datasets, photographs, newspaper clippings, journal articles, company reports, and government publications. The media is paper, linen, vellum, mylar, cardboard, microfilm and fiche, and photographic paper. This database is the electronic index of the entire collection. Most of the items were scanned as TIFs and converted to PDFs for internet availability. Access is through the NBMG main website at http://www.nbmg.unr.edu, followed by clicking on 1). “Minerals & Energy”, 2). “Mining”, and 3). "Nevada Mining District Files". The scanned documents can be viewed and downloaded for free. The collection is divided up into 543 mining district and 17 county general files. About 5% or so of the entries are multiple entries for documents covering more than one mining district. About 10% of the collection was either not scanned due to copyright or other restrictions, or was entered but not yet scanned. The unscanned documents are available for viewing at the NBMG in the Great Basin Science Sample and Records Library. About 1-2% of the entries have yet to be linked, but are also available for viewing at the NBMG. The metadata is preliminary and will be updated and edited as necessary before being finalized.
