Summary

This USGS data release presents tabular data and photos used to determine (1) the duration of flow, subsurface temperature, and concurrent infiltration along an ephemeral channel and (2) vertical change of soil moisture, texture, and pore-water chemistry in the unsaturated zone at selected locations. The data were collected to investigate the feasibility of managed aquifer recharge (MAR) for aquifer storage and recovery in Bedell Flat hydrographic area, Nevada. The supplemental data consist of 4 tabular datasets and time-lapse photographs of discharge events. Data in this release include: (1) Bird Springs channel site location information (tabular data), (2) Bird Springs channel stream stage and subsurface temperature data (tabular [...]

Purpose

Datasets were collected as part of a cooperative U.S. Geological Survey study with the Truckee Meadows Water Authority in Bedell Flat Hydrographic Area, Nevada. The study purpose was to investigate two types of potential MAR in an alluvial basin (1) natural infiltration along an ephemeral channel and (2) infiltration through engineered rapid infiltration basins (RIBs). Natural infiltration was investigated by estimating seepage loss rates at six study sites along the ephemeral channel. Infiltration through RIBs was estimated by evaluating characteristics of the unsaturated zone at selected locations. The intended use of these datasets include, but are not limited to, determining the during of a runoff event, modeling infiltration of surface water in an ephemeral channel, and evaluating potential change in the vertical movement of infiltrated surface water through the unsaturated zone.
