1) To quantify spatial (microsite, hillslope, watershed) and temporal (decadal, centennial) variability of fire regimes in Blue River and Fall Creek areas on the Willamette National Forest as an example of a mixed-severity fire regime system; 2) To understand patterns of defoliation by spruce budworm over recent centuries; and 3)To examine how temperature and precipitation variation in the past 500-800 yrs compare with projections of future variation under different future climate change scenarios.
