For the SRLCC to function properly there needs to be definition and agreement among the partners on the resource conservation objectives and the strategies to reach them. The strategic synthesis identifies resource objectives that reflect the input and agreement of the partners, and specific outcomes and measures that can guide annual work plans for the partnership over the coming years.
The strategic synthesis involves three phases: 1) one-on-one interviews with Steering Committee members and/or designated staff to identify partner priority resources, management challenges, landscape processes and landscape stressors (please see the attached interview questions for details), 2) a review of existing strategic conservation documents from partners, and 3) workshops in each state to discuss the convergence of this information and to identify the applied science and decision support tools needed by resource managers.
The H. John Heinz III Center for Science, Economics and the Environment in collaboration with the Navajo Nation Department of Fish and Wildlife was selected as the Cooperator to complete the strategic synthesis scope of work. The Heinz Center, an environmental nonprofit, facilitated the workshops.
