Summary

This data set summarizes the results from water and sediment samples collected from wetlands near decommissioned petroleum wells throughout the Texas Gulf Coast in order to determine the presence of constituents related to petroleum production. Site selection and sample collection occurred during an approximate 9 month period from September 2015 to May 2016. The data set includes two tables: one contains sediment-quality results and the other contains water-quality results.

Purpose

Decommissioned petroleum wells are found throughout the Texas Gulf Coast. The methods employed to decommission petroleum wells have changed over time, resulting in different degrees of possible environmental contamination in areas near these wells. Sediment core and water-quality samples were collected from wetlands throughout the Texas Gulf Coast near decommissioned petroleum wells in order to determine the presence of constituents related to petroleum production. The results from 25 wetland sampling sites are included. The sediment and water samples were collected by the USGS Texas Water Science Center in cooperation with the Houston Advanced Research Center (HARC) and analyzed by either the USGS National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL), a USGS research laboratory in Menlo Park, or USGS contract laboratories.
