Matchett, E.L., and Fleskes, J.P., 2018, Recent historical and projected (years 2006–99) areas (km2) of managed, flooded habitats used by waterbirds overwintering in Central Valley, California basins for 17 climate, urbanization, and water management scenarios: U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/F7NV9GDQ.

Summary

The dataset summarizes areas of Central Valley waterbird habitats (i.e., wetland and cropland types) that are available for each of 17 projected scenarios by planning basin, scenario, habitat, and month (August – April of the following year). The dataset also includes relatively recent (year 2005) area of habitat (i.e., “existing_km2”) for comparison with habitat areas based on scenarios. In contrast with the dataset referenced as "Table A1", which solely includes the three managed, flooded cropland habitats, cropland habitats in this dataset are defined as winter-flooded rice, unplowed dry rice, winter-flooded corn, unplowed dry corn, and other winter-flooded cropland (in Tulare basin). Wetlands are defined as summer-irrigated seasonal [...]

Purpose

Project research was funded to evaluate potential future impacts of changes in climate, urbanization, and water supply management on waterbird habitats. These data provide results information that is referenced in a corresponding scientific article composed for publication (in review). References to the data currently pertain to waterbirds, but may be applied to other species that depend on some or all of the same habitats as waterbirds. We anticipate that this data will be used in the future to evaluate potential scenario and habitat impacts on waterbird biology, namely through the use of avian bioenergetics models.
