Summary

These data provide information regarding beryllium-7 radioisotope activity, bulk density, and percent organic matter for wetland soils in the immediate outfall region of an operational Mississippi River diversion. From them, information relating to short-term mineral sediment mass accumulation rates and sediment retention rates in the receiving basin can be inferred.

Purpose

In this project we collected short (~5cm) soil cores from marsh surfaces during winter/spring and summer/fall in the immediate outfall area of the Davis Pond Freshwater Diversion around 30 km west of New Orleans, USA. These data, together with measurements of sediment delivery facilitated by the river diversion, are used to estimate sediment mass accumulation and retention rates in contrasting 160-day time periods that differed largely in diversion inflow rate and river sediment conditions.
