Abstract: Alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) are both a keystone species and a flagship species that people care about. In Florida, alligators are ecologically, socially (tourism), and economically (alligator harvests and farming) important. The health of Florida’s alligator populations is of interest to FWC, FWS, and NPS as land and wildlife managers. In addition, the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration Task Force, South Florida Water Management District and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are using alligators as indicators of ecological responses to Everglades restoration.
