Summary
These data are 30m by 30 m grids of the mean Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) between 2001-2014 in the western United States. The SPEI index was developed by Sergio M. Vicente-Serrano and coauthors (https://spei.csic.es/index.html). Source evapotranspiration and precipitation data were generated by gridMET (http://www.climatologylab.org/gridmet.html).

Barnard, D.M., Germino, M.J., Bradford, J.B., O’Connor, R.C., Andrews, C.M., and Shriver, R.K., 2021, Are drought indices and climate data good indicators of ecologically relevant soil moisture dynamics in drylands? Ecological Indicators, v. 133, p. 108379, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecolind.2021.108379.
This dataset was generated to assess how well generalized drought indices, like the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index, describe and predict ecological drought and soil moisture dynamics at ecologically relevant scales. Studies using these data examined the influence of these SPEI variables on recruitment of big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) following restoration treatments across the Great Basin region, as well as the relationships between SPEI and patterns of seasonal soil moisture across the western U.S. more generally.
