Summary

Long-term monitoring data of geomorphic, hydrological, and biological characteristics of landscapes. This information provides an effective means of relating observed change to possible causes of the change. Identification of changes in basin characteristics, especially in arid areas where the response to altered climate or land use is generally rapid and readily apparent, might provide the initial direct indications that factors such as global warming and cultural impacts have affected the environment. The Vigil Network provides an opportunity for earth and life scientists to participate in a systematic monitoring effort to detect landscape changes over time, and to relate such changes to possible causes. Purpose

​The Vigil Network was created to address the need for long-term, broad spectrum data collection to facilitate the study of the effects of global climate change. A system of small sites and drainage basins where geomorphic, hydrologic, and biological data were periodically collected. Observation periods are intended to be greater than the life span of a single individual, and data are intended to be archived in a readily retrievable format to allow study by future generations of scientists.

These data were originally recorded on paper files and either scanned or manually entered to generate electronic files. Data were archived on a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) website (http://wwwpaztcn.wr.usgs.gov/vigil/) prior to October 1, 2016, but it has been discontinued. All images and PDFs were generated prior to July 21, 2001. Paper files are still in existence and are either housed by USGS or the National Archives.
