Summary
The Pacific Islands CASC aims to provide capacity building opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs, and early career professionals across the region. Direct participation on PI-CASC co-produced research projects will help them gain invaluable experience to prepare for future careers in research, resource managment, and policy, and help to enhance future professional workforce capacity in their own Pacific communities. Our current programs are:
UH Manoa Graduate Scholars
This program provides full funding opportunities to graduate students whose research reflects DOI, USGS, and PI-CASC priorities on climate science in the region. The students will also have professional development opportunities and participate in outreach activities.
UHH/MCC Graduate Scholars
This program includes graduate students working on projects whose research will focus on knowledge co-production of climate adaptation science on Hawaiʻi Island. The students participate in numerous professional development opportunities.
University of Guam Program
At the University of Guam, this program centers around inviting current resource managers to enroll in a masterʻs degree program at the university to research the science they need to make the best management decisions for climate adaptation in their area.
Summer Undergraduate Research Program
The SURF program provides promising undergraduate students the opportunity to gain valuable research experience, increase their knowledge of climate science, and expand their overall skill set in environmental science in Hawaiʻi or Guam. For ten weeks during the summer, students work with a faculty member at one of the university consortium institutions on a research project focusing on climate science, and participate in professional development workshops and a final research symposium.
