Colorado River at Compact Point near Lees Ferry, AZ - March 2021 Surface Velocity Mapping
Summary
This data release includes measurements of surface velocity magnitude and direction from the Colorado River at Compact Point near Lees Ferry, AZ, on March 18, 2021. These data were used to develop a remote sensing technique for measuring reach-scale river surface velocity magnitude and direction from overlapping video data. The dataset contains approximately 1.2 km of river length. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility mapping surface velocity from overlapping video acquired from a small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) hovering above the river by applying Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) techniques, and to establish best practices for creating reach-scale surface velocity maps. The data were collected [...]
The data were collected to fulfill the objectives of a proposal funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Inland Oil Spill Preparedness Project (IOSPP). Reach-scale measurements of surface velocity magnitude and direction can be used to predict the travel time of the leading edge of contamination and identifying areas where contaminants will accumulate during riverine oil spills, increasing the readiness and response capabilities of DOI in the event of an inland oil spill.
