Summary

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This data set consists of county estimates of nitrogen and phosphorus in kilograms from animal manure in the conterminous United States for 2002. These estimates were based on county-level population data of livestock, poultry, and other animals (cattle, poultry, hogs and pigs, horses and ponies, sheep and lambs) from the 2002 Census of Agriculture (2004) using methods described in Ruddy and others (2006).

Purpose

These data are intended to provide estimates of nonpoint nitrogen and phosphorus inputs associated with manure. These data were also developed to support hydrologic studies that are part of the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Water-Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Program. The goal of the NAWQA program is to develop long-term consistent and comparable information on streams, groundwater, and aquatic ecosystems to support sound management and policy decisions (Gilliom and others, 1995).
