Summary

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. This data set is one of many developed in support of The High Plains Groundwater Availability Project and the U.S. Geological Survey Data Series Report: Geodatabase Compilation of Hydrogeologic, Water-Budget Component, and Remote Sensing data for the High Plains aquifer, 2011 (DS 777). This dataset contains point vector data of 8,149 wells with 8,149 water-level measurement records located in areas overlying the northern High Plains aquifer in the United [...]

Purpose

The purpose of these data is to establish baseline conditions for water levels in the northern High Plains aquifer. Predevelopment for this study is defined as the first occurrence of a static-water-level measurment for a well (1900's to 1990's) and represents the time period prior to substantial groundwater development in an area. Water-level data are used along with hydrogeologic and hydraulic properties data to build a conceptual model for an aquifer. Long term water-level data can provide information about declines in the water table in an aquifer, show trends in groundwater pumping, and provide information on groundwater-flow direction. These data will be used for calibration targets for the predevelopment simulation period of the northern High Plains groundwater flow mdel.
