Summary
The Upper Cretaceous Eagle Ford Group in southwest Texas represents a geologic record of the Cenomanian-Turonian period in the southern Western Interior Seaway (WIS) of North America prior to and during the Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE-2). Geochemical data generated and compiled here were collected on core samples taken from a wellbore near Del Rio, TX for the purpose of better characterizing the properties and variability within the Eagle Ford Group, an important and prolific petroleum source rock unit. The data have been integrated with sedimentological observations to characterize paleoenvironmental conditions at the southern WIS before and during OAE-2 (French et al., 2024).

This core was collected and sampled for geochemical and mineralogical characterization to further the following research and petroleum resource assessment goals of the USGS Gulf Coast Geologic Energy Assessments and Research project: (1) Improve stratigraphic understanding and regional correlations of the Eagle Ford Group (Cenomanian – Turonian interval) in Texas. (2) Investigate rock properties to assess original organic richness and mineralogy of the Eagle Ford Group. (3) Evaluate and interpret the depositional environment for source rocks deposited in the Texas area of the Western Interior Seaway during the late Cretaceous. (4) Integrate sedimentological and geochemical datasets to refine our understanding of depositional processes and paleoenvironmental conditions relevant to the Eagle Ford Group.
