This digital dataset consists of monthly climate data from the Basin Characterization Model v8 (BCMv8) for the updated Central Valley Hydrologic Model (CVHM2) for water years 1922 to 2019. The BCMv8 data are available in a separate data release titled "The Basin Characterization Model - A regional water balance software package (BCMv8) data release and model archive for hydrologic California, water years 1896-2020". The data were modified by: (1) extracting the data from the data source for the relevant model domain and times, and (2) rescaling the 270-meter BCMv8 grid to the small watersheds that contribute boundary flow to the CVHM2 model for the hydrologic variables recharge and runoff. The three data pieces...

The Landsat-based Irrigation Dataset (LANID) uses a random-forest machine-learning model with greenness and vegetative indices, climate data, and crop masks to identify irrigated crops (Xie and others, 2021, Xie and Lark, 2021). Separate western US and eastern US methods are used to train and validate the model. Annual LANID maps for 2018-20 were created using the same techniques in Xie and others, 2021, and Xie and Lark, 2021.

These datasets are created during the irrigation reanalysis workflow (irrigation_reanalysis.zip). The actet_openet.cbh, potet_openet.cbh, and dyn_ag_frac.param area created during step one of the workflow when converting daily OpenET/SSEBop results into input for the NHM. The nhm_2000_2020_ag_irrigation_add.csv, and nhm_2000_2020_ag_irrigation_add_vol.csv area estimated daily results output by the NHM.

The BCMv8 data are extracted from the state-wide data for the CVHM2 modeled area for water years 1922 to 2019. Climate data for CVHM2 are presented in two child...

Version 2.0 Processing steps were clarified and the abstract...

This data release provides a monthly irrigation water use reanalysis for the period 2000-20 for all U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Watershed Boundary Dataset of Subwatersheds (Hydrologic Unit Code 12 [HUC12]) in the conterminous United States (CONUS). Results include reference evapotranspiration (ETo), actual evapotranspiration (ETa), irrigated areas, consumptive use, and effective precipitation for each HUC12. ETo and ETa were estimated using the operational Simplified Surface Energy Balance (SSEBop, Senay and others, 2013; Senay and others, 2020) model executed in the OpenET (Melton and others, 2021) web-based application implemented in Google Earth Engine. Results provided by OpenET/SSEBop were summarized to hydrologic...

The Central Valley covers about 20,000 square miles and is one of the most productive agricultural regions in the world. Because the valley is semi-arid, surface-water availability varies substantially. Agricultural demand for irrigation is heavily reliant on surface water and groundwater. In the last few decades, land-use changes and limitations to surface-water availability—including drought and environmental flows—have increased pumping, causing groundwater-level and groundwater-storage declines, renewed subsidence, decreased stream flows, and changes to ecosystems. As these recent trends continue, monitoring, data compilation, and modeling are critical to understanding the dynamics of groundwater use and developing...
