The Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology (MBMG) Mining Property File collection was amassed over the years through private and industry donations of engineering and geologic reports, pictures, correspondence, news clippings, and production information. The collection presently contains over 4,400 property-specific files (records). The physical files are organized first by Montana county and then by mine or project name. Files may contain information related to a particular mining claim, a collection of claims, or a mining exploration project. Beginning August 1989, a triggered digital recording system was implemented that captured data for larger events but did not provide continuous digital recording. From August 1999 through July 2000, paper seismograms were the only source of continuous seismic data for Montana¿s Regional Seismic Network. This network includes data from 35 recording stations operated by the MBMG as well as data from 7 USGS stations located in Montana and operated cooperatively with the MBMG. Continuous digital data recorded since August 15, 2001 is archived at the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) Data Management Center using a SEED data format. The Earthquake Studies Office (ESO) of the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology opened in June, 1980 to operate the Montana Regional Seismograph Network. The office collects and analyzes seismic data and reports earthquake information. The ESO also collects and stores seismograms recorded in Montana by other groups and agencies. Prior to 1989, the only method used to collect earthquake data was paper seismograms recorded on drum recorders using pen and ink, or heat pen and heat-sensitive paper. Thus, paper seismograms recorded before 1989 are original (and irreplaceable) records. The Mineral Museum collection is estimated to contain over 15,000 fine mineral specimens from throughout the world, of which over 1,300 are on display. The collection is protected by an electronic security system. Stored specimens are catalogued (in hardcopy format and on an Excel spreadsheet)using the Hey system and maintained in a secure specimen storage room. Donated specimens are reviewed by the museum curator (a senior MBMG geologist) and accessioned as appropriate. The collection is supported primarily by Bureau funding. The collection contains geologic, engineering, development, and production information about the Crystal Mountain fluorite mine located in Ravalli County, Montana. Mr. Taber directed the mine's mineral potential evaluation, development, production, and closure. The collection is significant because it represents an intact information repository about the development and operation of one of only two producing fluorite mines in Montana.

Meteorology at the land surface affects many processes in the terrestrial biogeochemical system. Measurements of near-surface meteorological conditions are made at many locations, but we are often faced with having to perform ecosystem process simulations in areas where no meteorological measurements have been taken. Water well logs are maintained in the MBMG’s Ground-Water Information Center (GWIC). The collection currently includes approximately 250,000 records (both in hard copy and digital formats) describing water-related resources (wells, boreholes, springs, etc.) in Montana. The paper collection is stored in the GWIC offices at the Bureau. The electronic data is stored on an SQL server and is available over the internet at http://mbmggwic.mtech.edu/. In addition to well log data, GWIC is also actively collecting and maintaining: 33,300 water-quality analyses from 14,700 sites, 2.3 million historic water-level records from 12,300 sites, as well as field-inventory and aquifer-test data.

The Bureau has developed an aerial photo repository. The photos have accumulated over decades, mostly through donations and some purchases for mapping projects. The photos are stored in 45 4-drawer file cabinets ; about half of the photos remain in cardboard boxes (112) in which they were shipped to us. We estimate that there are over 200,000 photos (of varying condition) in the repository. The photos are used frequently by Bureau staff to assist with geologic field mapping and other investigations, and less frequently by the public. Full inventory, reorganization, filing, and creation of indices are short- to middle-term goals. Digitizing of the indices and the photos are desirable long-term goals. Aerial Photographs...

The collection is housed in a modern building just off the Montana Tech campus. It is organized in 2,679 drawers and is estimated to contain more than 80,000 specimens including many polished slabs and over 10,000 thin sections. The collection was initiated as early as 1940 and expanded through 1981. The specimens in this unique and outstanding collection are largely from Butte (Montana) underground mines, but a significant number are from other districts in which the Anaconda Company had interests or were visited by Anaconda Company geologists.
