A long-term, multiseason, fish egg sampling program is conducted annually on the Detroit, Saint Clair, and Saint Marys rivers to identify where productive fish spawning habitat currently exists and evaluate habitat restoration projects. Egg mats were placed on the river bottom during the spring and fall at historic spawning areas, candidate fish spawning habitat restoration sites, and completed spawning habitat restoration sites throughout the rivers. Widespread evidence was found of lithophilic spawning by numerous native fish species, including walleye (Sander vitreus), lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens), suckers (Family: Catostomidae), and trout-perch (Percopsis omiscomaycus)....

This dataset contains depths and bottom velocities at discreet sampling locations in the St. Clair-Detroit River System. Measurements were made to complement data on fish egg deposition in the St. Clair-Detroit Rivers from 2005-2016. Depth measurements were made with a boat mounted sonar unit at the beginning of spring and fall sampling season from 2005-2016. Water velocities near the river bed were measured in 2013 and 2015 using a handheld velocity meter attached to a 6.8 kg sounding weight. The sounding weight was lowered off the side of a boat to the river bottom and then lifting the weight slighlty off the bottom to ensure the weight and velocity meter were properly oriented with the current, the mean velocity...
Egg mat retention trials were conducted with walleye (Stizostedion vitreum) and lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis) eggs in an experimental flume tank, seeded directly on egg mats (test retention efficiency) and hand dispersed in flowing flume water to simulate spawning over egg mats (test capture efficiency) with and without alternate substrate. In the field study, we measured number of eggs collected on mats and with bottom drift nets in the Detroit River to compare capture effectiveness. The field collection data describe the number, date of collection, and exact collection location of target species (walleye and lake whitefish). The flume trial data include number of eggs retained or collected, water velocity,...

Field measurements of flow velocity and discharge were acquired from the Middle Channel of the St. Clair River delta, Michigan, May 2-4, 2022. The velocity and discharge measurements included in this data release were obtained using a SonTek M9 acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) deployed from a boat with an outboard motor. River Surveyor Live software version 4.1. was used to acquire and store the ADCP files. The ADCP data were collected along 8 transects spanning the width of the Middle Channel; two passes across the channel were made at each transect. This data release provides text files derived from the raw ADCP data files using the Velocity Mapping Toolbox (VMT) software version 4.09. Text files with...

The U.S Geological Survey conducted hydrographic surveys from September 13-16, 2021 to monitor fish spawning substrate placements (reefs) in the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers, Michigan. A multibeam echosounder was used from the Great Lakes Science Center research vessel Cisco to collect the hydrographic data. These data were used to generate maps of river bottom topography in locations where spawning substrates have been placed. The reefs surveyed in the Detroit River included: Fort Wayne, New (East) Belle Isle, Belle Isle, and Grassy Island. The reefs surveyed in the St. Clair River in 2021 included: Middle Channel, Pointe Aux Chenes, and Harts Light. The data for each study reach were produced in LAS format supported...

The U.S. Geological Survey used a ponar sampler to collect bed material from the Middle Channel of the St. Clair River Delta on November 10, 2021. Three sediment samples were collected upstream of the artificial spawning reefs constructed in the Middle Channel and two on the reefs themselves. The bed sediment samples were dried and sieved at 1/2 phi increments to determine their grain-size distribution.
