This data release provides total and aqueous arsenic (As) determinations and associated field readings collected from groundwater sampled from 254 newly constructed private residential wells between 2014 and 2016. The study focuses on three regions of Minnesota that differ geologically: south-central (herein called central), northwest, and northeast. These study regions were chosen due to their prevalent elevated As concentrations in drinking water. Each of the 254 wells were sampled in three rounds by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). The timing of the three sampling rounds was (1) immediately or shortly after well construction (round 1); (2) 3-6 months after initial sample collection (round 2); and (3)...

Four digital water-surface profile maps for a 14-mile reach of the Mississippi River near Prairie Island in Welch, Minnesota from the confluence of the St. Croix River at Prescott, Wisconsin to upstream of the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Lock and Dam No. 3 in Welch, Minnesota, were created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Prairie Island Indian Community. The water-surface profile maps depict estimates of the areal extent and depth of inundation corresponding to selected water levels (stages) at the USGS streamgage Mississippi River at Prescott, Wisconsin (USGS station number 05344500). Current conditions for estimating near-real-time areas of water inundation by use...

This dataset consists of select contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) including pesticides and transformation products, pharmaceuticals and transformation products, and wastewater indicator compound results measured in 131 surface water, 129 bottom sediment, 7 field replicate, and 6 field blank samples collected from 131 sites located on 27 tributaries of the Great Lakes during the summer of 2019. Samples were analyzed at the U.S. Geological Survey National Water Quality Laboratory (NWQL). Surface water samples were collected and analyzed for 238 pesticides, pesticide transformation products, and surrogate compounds (NWQL laboratory schedule 2437; Sandstrom and others, 2015), 152 pharmaceuticals, pharmaceutical...

This U.S. Geological Survey data release provides detailed sampling site information, hole and well construction details, and data dictionaries necessary to interpret historical and future physical, chemical, and biological data sets derived from samples collected and measurements made in association with the National Crude Oil Spill Fate and Natural Attenuation Research Site. In 1979, a high-pressure pipeline carrying crude oil burst near the city of Bemidji, Minnesota and spilled approximately 1.7 million liters (10,700 barrels) of crude oil into glacial outwash deposits (Essaid and others, 2011). Since 1983, scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with scientists from academic institutions,...

Hydrologic indicator statistics were computed for 82 selected surface water sites located throughout Minnesota using daily streamflow data from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Water Information System (NWIS). The 187 hydrologic indicator statistics were computed in RStudio version 3.5.0 using the EflowStats version 5.0.0 (Mills and Blodgett, 2017) and NWCCompare version 5.0 (Blodgett, 2017) packages. The computed hydrologic indicator statistics encompass the five components of hydrologic conditions: magnitude, frequency, duration, timing, and rate of change. Magnitude is the amount of water moving past a fixed location in a given unit of time. Frequency refers to how often streamflows above a given magnitude...
Note: this version has been superseded by version 3.0: Trost, J.J., Krall, A.L., Baedecker, M., Cozzarelli, I.M., Herkelrath, W.N., Jaeschke, J.B., Delin, G.N., Berg, A.M., and Bekins, B.A., 2020, Data Sets from the National Crude Oil Spill Fate and Natural Attenuation Research Site near Bemidji, Minnesota, USA (ver. 3.0, March 2020): U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/P9FJ8I0P. This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data Release provides analytical data from samples and measurements completed at the National Crude Oil Spill Fate and Natural Attenuation Research Site near Bemidji, Minnesota (Site) between 1984 and 2010. The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the U.S. National Park Service, conducted a study to determine the presence of algal toxins and Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis (MAP) within Pipestone National Monument located in Pipestone County in southwestern Minnesota. Three algal toxins (microcystins, saxitoxin, and anatoxin-a) were analyzed in 12 water-quality samples collected from 8 surface and 2 quarry-water sample sites by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) methods. Two of the three analyzed algal toxins (microcystins and anatoxin-a) were also analyzed using immunosorbent strip test methods. All analysis kits were provided by Eurofins Abraxis Inc. (Warminister, Pa) and analyses were completed...
This data release provides total and aqueous arsenic (As) determinations and associated field readings collected from groundwater sampled from 254 newly constructed private residential wells between 2014 and 2016. Also included in this data release is a subset of well construction information provided by the driller's well logs. Included in version 2.0 (June 2018) of this data release is a set of ancillary concentration measurements for aqueous nitrate+nitrite nitrogen, aqueous manganese, aqueous iron, and total sulfate. The study focuses on three regions of Minnesota that differ geologically: south-central (herein called central), northwest, and northeast. These study regions were chosen due to their prevalent...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Minnesota Department of Health, conducted a study to determine the occurrence of six unregulated contaminants in source and finished drinking-water samples collected from 67 public water supply systems throughout Minnesota. Minnesota relies on groundwater and surface water sources for drinking water. Land use, such as wastewater discharge and agriculture, is a factor that determines groundwater and surface water quality. The public water supply systems were categorized based on whether the source water is from surface water or groundwater. Groundwater sites were further categorized by expected sources of contamination based on land use: wastewater, agriculture,...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) conducted a cooperative study to develop linear regression models that quantify relations among 173 hydrologic explanatory metrics in five categories (duration, frequency, magnitude, rate-of-change, and timing) computed from streamgage records and 132 biological response metrics in six categories (composition, habitat, life history, reproductive, tolerance, trophic) computed from fish community samples collected from the 1996-2015 water years (WYs). In addition, linear relations were quantified between hydrologic metrics, fish-based indices of biotic integrity (FIBI) scores, and FIBI scores normalized to the impairment threshold...
