The U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) model was used to aid in the interpretation of monitoring data and simulate nutrient loads in streams across the Midwest Region of the United States. SPARROW is a hybrid empirical/process-based mass balance model that can be used to estimate the major sources and environmental factors that affect the long-term supply, transport, and fate of contaminants in streams. The spatially explicit model structure is defined by a river reach network coupled with contributing catchments. The model is calibrated by statistically relating watershed sources and transport-related properties to monitoring-based water-quality load...

Nitrogen and phosphorus losses from agricultural areas have impacted the water quality of downstream rivers, lakes, and oceans. As a result, investment in the adoption of agricultural best management practices (BMPs) has grown but assessments of their effectiveness at large spatial scales have been sparse. This study applies regional Spatially Referenced Regression On Watershed-attributes (SPARROW) models developed for the Midwest, Northeast, and Southeast regions of the United States to quantify regional effects of BMPs on nutrient losses from agricultural lands. These models were used because they account for specific BMPs in the prediction of instream nutrient loads. This data release accompanies the journal...

Two methods of calculating hydrologic alteration were applied to modeled daily streamflow data for 9,201 12-digit hydrologic unit code (HUC12) pour points draining to the Gulf of Mexico (Robinson and others, 2020). The first method is a new modified method of calculating ecosurplus and ecodeficit called hydro change. For this project, ecosurplus and ecodeficit have been combined to assess overall hydrologic regime change. The second method is the confidence interval hypothesis test (Kroll and others, 2015). The first method is a means of quantifying hydrologic alteration while the second is a hypothesis test to simply determine if statistically significant alteration has occurred. Both methods are employed to determine...

This dataset compiled 24 years of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) seepage-run data from 15 studies covering southern Missouri and northern Arkansas in the Ozark Plateaus Physiographic Province (Ozarks). Previously these data were only available separately from the original USGS studies. The dataset can be used in surface-water and groundwater investigations assessing water quantity, quality, and availability in the Ozarks. The dataset includes "Ozark Plateaus seepage flow-line dataset, southern Missouri and northern Arkansas, 1982-2006" and "Ozark Plateaus seepage point dataset, southern Missouri and northern Arkansas, 1982-2006". Seepage-run data were collected by measuring discharge at points along a stream,...
This dataset was compiled to summarize discharge measurements from several published groundwater and surface-water studies in the Ozarks of southern Missouri and northern Arkansas. The discharge measurements were part of numerous USGS studies to assess interaction between streams and groundwater aquifers. A gaining stream is described as a surface-water stream that gains water from the groundwater aquifer and a losing stream is described as a surface-water stream that loses water to the groundwater aquifer. This product is intended to be used in surface-water and groundwater investigations assessing water quantity, quality, and availability. The product includes flow-line data digitized along National Hydrography...

This data release contains input and output data from hydrologic simulations of streamflow conditions in the Red River Basin (RRB) using the Precipitation-Runoff Modeling System (PRMS). The RRB PRMS model predicts components of the water balance at 3065 hydrologic response units (HRU) and streamflow for 1614 stream segments within the model domain for the simulation period 1981 to 2016. The data release contains two shapefiles: (1) a map of HRUs in the model domain and (2) a map of stream segments in the model domain. In addition to the shapefiles, the data release includes files containing the calibrated parameters of the RRB PRMS model as well as model inputs and outputs. The model inputs are (1) climate data,...

The U.S. Geological Survey’s SPAtially Referenced Regression On Watershed attributes (SPARROW) for the Southeastern United States was used to simulate changes in total nitrogen, total phosphorus and suspended sediment load in streams under two scenarios: (1) where all forests are urbanized and (2) where all forests are urbanized and runoff is adjusted based on a non-forested landscape. This data release includes model input not published with the original model and used for scenario simulations, and model output for total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and suspended sediment under baseline conditions, scenario (1), and scenario (2). Original model input, output, and shapefiles are available (Roland and Hoos, 2020,...

Results from generalized additive models (GAM), random forest models (RFM), and cubist models (CUB) for three Dauphin Island Sealab (DIS) operated salinity sites in Mobile Bay are reported in this data release. These sites included Meaher Park (DIS:MHPA1), Middle Bay Lighthouse (DIS:MBLA1), and Dauphin Island (DIS:DPIA1). The constructed models predicted a 42-year daily salinity record from 1980 to 2021 at each site based on incomplete imputed salinity records and several explanatory variables. Explanatory variables included: daily streamflow from 8 United States Geological Survey (USGS) streamgages, daily minimum and maximum temperature, precipitation, vapor pressure, wind speed, wind direction, horizontal and...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) developed models to estimate the amount of water that is withdrawn and consumed by thermoelectric power plants (Diehl and others, 2013; Diehl and Harris, 2014; Harris and Diehl, 2019). The thermoelectric water use models are based on linked heat-and-water budgets that are constrained by power plant generation and cooling system technologies, the amount of fuels consumed and electricity generated, and environmental variables. The heat-budget side of the models calculates the amount of waste heat (fuel heat that is not converted to electricity) that is removed from the steam used to drive the turbines that generate electricity and transferred to the cooling system in a thermoelectric...
