A series of field measurements of surface water velocity derived from video and Doppler velocity radar collected by small unoccupied aircraft systems (sUAS) and portable sensors were collected at seven locations in Colorado, USA, during the summer of 2023. The measurements were utilized to compute surface velocity and discharge using the Probability Concept, Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV), and Space-Time Image Velocimetry (STIV) methods. This data release includes the original videos, radar spectra, and ancillary data necessary to produce the surface water velocity and streamflow results. Data are grouped into sections (child items) based on the data type and purpose: Ancillary Scripts: this child...

We developed an Internet of Things (IoT) prototype and associated cloud infrastructure for camera-based data collection and initial processing of river streamflow using the cloud (fig. 1). This pilot successfully created a hardware and cloud infrastructure to collect and upload video from a camera gage at San Pedro Creek in San Antonio, Texas. Using a ThingLogix Foundry instance in the Amazon Webservices Cloud, we have created a cloud framework that can auto-provision new camera-based gaging equipment, as well as process incoming videos into image frames for the computation of streamflow. Additionally, we began testing of serving timeseries data from a camera gage (water level and CPU temperature) using real-time...

This child item contains files representing Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) processing masks which excluded regions of invalid velocities from the PIV results. Masks typically are used to screen out velocities or prevent the creation of velocities for regions of an image where computed PIV velocities would be nonsensical or invalid. For example, near or on the channel banks, where a tree overhangs the channel, or the presence of a boat or other object in the water. By using masks, these regions can be excluded from analysis. The PIVLab software allows for the designation of a rectangular Region of Interest (ROI). For five of the field sites, which were located at engineered canals, a rectangular ROI was sufficient...

Digital flood-inundation maps were created by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Bandera County River Authority and Groundwater District and with the Texas Water Development Board for a 23-mile reach of the Medina River extending from Winans Creek to English Crossing, Texas. The flood-inundation maps represent a range of selected water-surface elevations at USGS streamflow-gaging station 08178880 Medina River at Bandera, Texas (hereinafter referred to as the “Bandera station”). Near-real time hydrologic data for estimating areas of inundation near the Bandera station are available from the USGS National Water Information System (NWIS) web interface (https://waterdata.usgs.gov/tx/nwis/) and...

Discharge measurements made at U.S. Geological Survey Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal near Lemont, Illinois, streamgage (05536890) between 2005 and 2013 were reviewed and manually processed using QRev v3.12. Discharge was measured using Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) deployed from a moving boat according to the procedures described in Mueller and others (2013). QRev generates an extensible markup language file (XML) that provides information on measurement characteristics (Mueller, 2016a,b). Data from these XML files were exported into a comma-separated values (CSV) table to create a summary of measurement information. This CSV table also indicates which measurements were used in the development of index-velocity...

This child item contains the image frames extracted from videos for each field site. The images serve as the input to the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) analysis. There are zip archive files for each field site included in this child item. Each of the zip files contain three directories of images: original: these are the image frames extracted from the videos without other modification. stable: these image frames have been created by running the original frames through an image stabilization program. See the FGDC metadata Process Steps for more information. stable_subtracted: these image frames have been created by using background subtraction on the stabilized images. See the FGDC metadata Process Steps for...

A USGS Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS) Aquatic Airshow field testing and demonstration event occurred March 20–21, 2018, on the Arkansas River at Parkdale, CO, USA. At the airshow, a group of USGS scientists and technicians gathered to test non-contact sensors for measuring stream discharge using UAS and a sensor mounted on a tag line. Scientists at the event performed a series of tests to measure river discharge with experimental non-contact techniques. USGS scientists and field personnel traditionally conduct a discharge measurement either by wading or working from a boat. Due to the potential danger and high risk to personnel safety, hydrologic measurement work is limited during very high flow events, ice break-up,...

In 2016, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Geological Survey, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers undertook a large-scale interagency field study to determine the influence of commercial barge vessels on the efficacy of the Electric Dispersal Barrier System (EDBS) in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal (CSSC) in preventing fish passage. This study included a series of trials in which a tow, consisting of a tug vessel and six fully-loaded barges, transited the EDBS in both upstream-bound and downstream-bound directions. The U.S. Geological Survey measured velocity profiles during these trials using synchronized velocity probes mounted on both the barge and the West canal wall. SonTek Argonaut SW 3,000 kHz acoustic...

The U.S. Geological Survey is testing deployments of continuous Large-Scale particle Image Velocimetry (LSPIV) streamgaging stations in areas with flashy flow regimes to measure streamflow during flood events. Videos were collected for the purpose of LSPIV streamflow analysis at a stage-discharge streamgaging station in a small, flashy urban stream in Urbana, Illinois, USA (Boneyard Creek at Urbana, IL, 03337000) with an internet protocol (IP) camera. The IP camera is mounted on the bottom of a walkway bridge spanning the creek at the gaging location, and is aimed to view the water for optimal camera perspective at all flow stages. Videos of peak streamflow events with gage height above 12 feet (local gage datum)...
