Geophysical methods were used to monitor infiltration during a water release, referred to as a “pulse flow”, in the Colorado River delta in March and April 2014. The pulse flow was enabled by Minute 319 of the 1944 United States-Mexico Treaty concerning water of the Colorado River. Field work was carried out by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Centro de Investigación Científica y de Educación Superior de Ensenada as part of a binational effort to monitor the hydrologic effects of the pulse flow along the limitrophe (border) reach of the Colorado River, and into Mexico. Repeat microgravity measurements were made at 25 locations in the southern limitrophe reach to quantify aquifer storage change during the pulse...

Airborne electromagnetic (AEM) and magnetic survey data were collected during March 2018 along 1,637 line kilometers over the western Hualapai Indian Reservation and surrounding areas. The survey was conducted as part of a study of the groundwater resources of the Truxton basin and Hualapai Plateau. The survey was designed to improve the understanding of the geometry of major hydrostratigraphic contacts of the study area. Deterministic laterally constrained inversion of the processed AEM data was conducted using the AarhusINV code (Auken and others, 2014) implemented in Aarhus Workbench software (Aarhus Geosoftware, Aarhus, Denmark). Inversion parameters were selected by running a series of test models with varying...

Controlled source audio-frequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT) data were collected over the Sevier fault, near Red Knoll in Kane County Utah, to better understand the hydrogeology of the area. CSAMT data provide vertical cross-section (profile) data about the resistivity of the subsurface, which may be related to lithologic boundaries and (or) grain-size distribution in the subsurface. CSAMT involves transmitting a current at various frequencies in one location, and measuring resistivity differences between electrodes spaced along a receiver line several kilometers from the transmitter. Sevier_fault_CSAMT_InversionData.zip: Text files of inverted resistivity values, starting model values, and corresponding x, y, z coordinates....

The depth of the water table, and fluctuations thereof, is a primary concern in hydrology. In riparian areas, the water table controls when and where vegetation grows. Fluctuations in the water table depth indicate changes in aquifer storage and variation in ET, and may also be responsible for the transport and degradation of contaminants. In the latter case, installation of monitoring wells is problematic because of the potential to create preferential flow pathways. We present a novel method for non-invasive water table monitoring using combined DC resistivity and repeat microgravity data. Resistivity profiles provide spatial resolution, but a quantifiable relation between resistivity changes and aquifer-storage...
Monitoring and modeling very large, rapid infiltration using geophysics during the 2014 Lower Colorado River pulse flow experiment In March and April 2014, an unprecedented experiment released over 100x106 cubic meters (81,000 acre-feet) of water from Morelos Dam into the normally-dry lower Colorado River below Yuma, Arizona, USA. More than half of the water released from Morelos Dam infiltrated within the limitrophe reach, a 32-km stretch between the Northern U.S.-Mexico International Boundary and the Southern International Boundary, a distance of just 32 river-kilometers. To characterize the spatial and temporal extent of infiltration, scientists from the US Geological Survey, Centro de Investigación Científica...

This data release contains five datasets that were used in a Scientific Investigations Report to be published in 2018. These datasets are continuous temperature data, temperature profiles data, SPMD environmental concentration data in picograms per liter of water, SPMD environmental concentration data in nanograms per SPMD, and SPMD quality-control concentration data. SPMD Environmental Concentration, Continuous Temperature and Temperature Profile: Semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) and Onset Computer Corporation® TidbiT v2 temperature loggers were deployed together at 8 locations within southern Lake Powell to collect water concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and to collect continuous...

Time-lapse DC resisitivity data were collected to monitor water table position during the 2015 Lower Coloradro River Pulse Flow. Resistivity data are sensitive to water-content change in the subsurface. DC resistivity data were collected at three transects. In the U.S., one transect was located parallel to the channel in the southern limitrophe reach nearby a streamgaging station. In Mexico, two transects were measured, one parallel and one perpendicular to the channel.

The Little Colorado River alluvial aquifer near Leupp, Arizona was investigated as a possible source of irrigation water for the Leupp and Birdsprings Chapters of the Navajo Nation. The physical, chemical, and hydraulic characteristics of the alluvial aquifer were studied using geophysical surveys, installation of observation wells, water-level measurements, chemical analyses, groundwater pumping simulations, and review of previous investigations. Geophysical surveys and well borings were used to measure the thickness of the aquifer. Geophysical surveys included Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) to better define the alluvial channel of the Little Colorado River near Leupp. ERT is a commonly used electrical...
