The project “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South” assessed terrestrial ecological systems in terms of suitability as broadly defined habitats supporting species identified in wildlife action plans. Assessment of three Southern Yellow Pine Forest classes (Longleaf Pine Flatwoods, Longleaf Pine Woodland, Shortleaf/Loblolly Pine Woodland) included threshold values associated with landscape configuration and patch size. Per-pixel assessment of these thresholds required a layer describing pine forest areas in the landscape. This layer was created by selecting the three pine classes mentioned above, along with Managed Forest, from the Mid-South Terrestrial Broadly Defined...
Assessment of Upland Hardwood Forest and Woodland used a measure of the proportion of Oak and Hickory in the forested landscape. This folder contains two data layers: The interpolated Oak Hickory basal area values obtained from USFS (ranging from 0 – 284.777), and a layer describing the proportion of oak hickory created by dividing the Oak Hickory layer by the Interpolated Basal Area of Live Trees data layer (ranging from 0-1). Source data obtained from the USFS live tree species basal area of the contiguous United States (2000 – 2009) data product, which integrates vegetation phenology from MODIS imagery with extensive FIA field plot data of tree species basal area to map species distribution and basal area at...

Forest Retention Index classes for the southeastern United States at 2040 were processed using the Forest Retention Decision Tree and rendered on a 30-meter by 30-meter grid. The Forest Retention Index is used only for current forestland, identified using National Land Cover Database 2011. Many datasets were used as inputs for the Forest Retention Decision Tree, and they can be grouped into five broad categories: Protected, Tier 1 Priority, Tier 2 Priority, Threats to Forest Retention, and Socio-Economic Value of Forests. Protected datasets include Protected Areas Database-United States, National Conservation Easement Database, state-maintained databases, and private datasets volunteered by conservation partners....
These are the most important input layers for the project “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South.” Name: Known Prairie Patches in the GCPO Description: Polygons describing prairie patches from five states (Alabama, Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Texas). This layer consists of 14,765 polygons totaling 54,419 acres. 14,595 polygon features were obtained from the Alabama Natural Heritage Commission (see Schotz and Barbour, Ecological assessment and terrestrial vertebrate surveys for Black Belt Prairies in Alabama, 2009). Arkansas prairie patch polygons were obtained by comparing prairies described by Adelman and Schwartz (Prairie Directory of North America, Oxford...

The Potential Reforestation Index geospatial data product is a companion to the Forest Retention Index product from the Mapping the South’s Forests of the Future project. The Retention Index describes the likelihood that existing forests will remain in a forested condition at decadal time steps through 2060. The Potential Reforestation Index describes the likelihood that a non-forested land unit will be converted to forest cover at those same time steps. We used two datasets to determine areas currently occupied by agriculture that may be most conducive to reforestation efforts: National Commodity Crop Productivity Index (NCCPI) and Potentially Restorable Wetlands on Agriculture Land (PRWAg). The NCCPI is available...

This layer identifies terrestrial Broadly Defined Habitats associated with species of greatest conservation need as described in Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South region of the United States. Condition Index scores are assigned on a per-grid-cell basis at 30-meter resolution. Condition Index scores are derived from seven attributes related to desired condition metrics for specific habitats: 1) whether a targeted habitat is present, 2) patch size, 3) patch configuration or distance to nearest patch, 4) a site condition metric, such as basal area for forested landscapes, 5) a second site condition metric, such as overstory canopy cover for forested landscapes, 6) if targeted habitat not present, potential for...
Watersheds selected to comprise the study are for the project “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South.” This selection represents an expansion of the boundary of the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GCPO LCC). The expansion process selected one or two counties in all directions and included the entire state of Louisiana. HUC12 level watersheds intersecting these counties were selected for the connectivity mapping project. The connectivity analysis is based on linking core areas of habitat most suitable for species identified in state wildlife action plans. Land units (30 meter grid cells) were given Condition Index scores derived from...
The “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South” project developed a map of Broadly Defined Habitats (BDH) associated with wildlife species of conservation concern. The map used Ecological Mapping Systems data from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in Texas and Ecological System Mapping data from Missouri Resource Assessment Partnership (MoRAP) in Oklahoma as inputs. Those products were resampled from 10 to 30-meter resolution and translated to BDH classes.

This data layer maps core areas of quality habitat for species of conservation concern at the large landscape scale based on an analysis of broadly defined habitats relevant to wildlife action plans in the Mid-South USA. This product is derived from the Mid-South Terrestrial Broadly Defined Habitats Condition Index layer, which is a product of the same project. That layer identified 15 types of terrestrial habitat for wildlife species of concern and the assessed site condition and patch and landscape configuration metrics at 30-meter resolution. The assessment assigns a Condition Index value ranging from 0-14 with zero representing non-habitat land and 14 representing a targeted habitat that meets all assessed condition...

This data layer summarizes ecological systems and land cover classes described in state-level and national-level maps as Broadly Defined Habitats for groups of species of conservation concern. Each grid cell in the raster is assigned a Condition Index value based on desired condition metrics using ancillary datasets and a decision tree approach for each assessed habitat. Grid cells are also assigned bar code descriptors indicating which metrics contributed to the Condition Index score for that cell. This layer also contains information about potential habitats based on the LANDFIRE Biophysical Settings data layer. This layer was developed to support the next iteration of the Conservation Blueprint developed by the...
The “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South” project obtained per-pixel percent overstory canopy data from the NLCD 2011 USFS Tree Canopy analytical (CONUS) layer. This layer was clipped to the study area boundary and projected to NAD 1983 Albers. Individual binary layers expressing desired ranges of percent overstory canopy cover were developed for each targeted Broadly Defined Habitat (BDH) class from this layer.
ABSTRACT: The USFWS supports State Fish & Wildlife Agencies in their efforts to conserve species. For the past year, the USFWS (staff of Science Applications and Ecological Services) have been working informally with staff of the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission to develop a process for designating Conservation Opportunity Areas (i.e. priority areas) for inclusion in their State Wildlife Action Plan. Prototype maps have been developed based on species distributions combined with habitat condition and change information contained in the Southeast Conservation Adaptation Strategy Blueprint. This project will help the Commission to work more strategically to conserve species, as well as help USFWS streamline regulatory...
LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation type (Vintage April 2017, acquired April 2018) is a principle input layer to the Broadly Defined Habitat (BDH) map developed by the “Modeling Habitat Connectivity to Support State Wildlife Action Plans in the Mid-South” project. This version clips the LANDFIRE product to the project study area. The 281 ecological system and land cover classes in this map were crosswalked to the fifteen BDH classes used by the project.
