This study examined long-term changes in ground height using Surface Elevation Tables (SETs). Measurements were taken in the floodplains of the Cache River at Buttonland Swamp in southern Illinois. The sites where data was collected included Crawford Tract and Eagle Pond from 2020-2022 and Deer Pond and Snake Hole from 2005-2022.
Soil samples were collected from Lady Bird Johnson Lake, Austin, Texas in 2019 to generate seed bank data for the rare plant Physostegia correllii. Seed germination data was produced from the soil samples kept in a greenhouse at the Wetland and Aquatic Research Center in Lafayette, LA.
Recurring drying and wetting events are likely to increase in frequency and intensity in predicted future droughts in the central United States and alter the regeneration potential of species. We explored the resistance of seed banks to successive droughts in 53 sites across the nine locations in baldcypress swamps in the southeastern United States. Along the Mississippi River Alluvial Valley and northern Gulf of Mexico, we investigated the capacity of seed banks to retain viable seeds after successive periods of drying and wetting in a greenhouse study. Mean differences of species richness and seed density were compared to examine the interactions of successive droughts, geographical location and water regime....

The decline of Taxodium distichum, bald cypress, forests along the Gulf Coast of North America is partly due to elevation loss and subsequent flooding. In many coastal wetlands, a common approach for coastal restoration is to rebuild elevation through the application of dredge spoil, but this technique has not been used widely in coastal forests due to concerns of negatively impacting trees. This experiment explored health responses of Nyssa aquatica, water tupelo, and T. distichum saplings to applications of low salinity dredge spoil in a greenhouse setting. Compared to controls, saplings of T. distichum grown in 7 and 15 cm sediment depths had higher final heights, and stem and total biomass while N. aquatica...

Data provided are the volumes of cypress cones, collected in the North American Baldcypress Swamp Network along the Mississippi River Alluvial Valley (southern Illinois to southern Louisiana, and Gulf of Mexico, east Texas to west Florida Panhandle, 2007 - 2019.
Data shows CH4 fluxes from the upper portion of cypress knees across various climate and flooding gradients of the North American Baldcypress Swamp Network in the Mississippi River Alluvial Valley. Climate data in the form of temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, and precipitation 3-days leading up to sampling date are also included. There various forms to calculate fluxes using cone and frustrum shapes that were compared to LiDAR scans fromi the field, therefore surface area and volume for each geometric shape is also included in the dataset.
During March and April of 2018, viable seeds were collected from Cañón de Fernández State Park in Lerdo, Durango and sent to Lafayette, LA for germination. This study tested the seedling growth and germination of Taxodium mucronatum from the Nazas River watershed at different salinity concentrations representing freshwater, moderate salinity, and high salinity.

The original distribution of the study species Trillium texanum is seep spring baygalls in east-central Texas and extreme northwestern Louisiana. Experiments to determine the effects of shading on T. texanum were conducted using short-term shade cloth treatments (full sunlight vs. 30% shading for 2-3 weeks), and a dryness treatment (moist vs. less moist). Mean height and cover responses of individuals were determined in conservation gardens located in Lafayette, Louisiana.
A better understanding of the potential of climate change to affect carbon dynamics in wetlands can be gained through the study of plant decomposition and soil organic matter trends across continental gradients. This study from 2007 and 2011 examines patterns of wood, leaf and cloth decomposition, as well as soil organic matter storage in Taxodium distichum (T. distichum) swamps along the Mississippi River Alluvial Valley (MRAV) and the northern Gulf of Mexico (GOM) in North America.
Estimates of the biomass of the knees of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum), and oddly shaped, difficult to quantify vegetation components, can be critical to improve estimates of carbon stock in blue carbon assessments. To this end, tree metrics (e.g., density, height, biomass) were examined in 2004 at mixed baldcypress swamps across the Mississippi River Alluvial Valley (MRAV) from Illinois to Louisiana. Biomass of knees was estimated using the point-centered quarter method and volume/mass regressions calculated from measurements of knee height and diameter of the base of knees.
Genetic diversity may promote a plant species’ invasiveness by facilitating the evolution of local adaptation, enhanced competitive abilities, and phenotypic plasticity. We examined the possible role of genetic diversity in the invasiveness of purple loosestrife, Lythrum salicaria L., a Eurasian native introduced to North America, through a broad geographic comparison of eight populations, four from Europe and four from North America. We further cultivated these populations in two common gardens varying by nearly 20 degrees of latitude to evaluate whether invasive populations exhibit heightened growth/reproductive capabilities and/or phenotypic plasticity when faced with widely varying environmental conditions....

On November 11, 2021, the height, density, and species richness of trees were recorded in five plots along a 175 m transect at Hickory Point State Forest near Pocomoke City, Maryland. This data was divided into categories depending on if the tree was alive, dead, or a sapling. Emergent species' height, density, and richness was also recorded.

This work captures a multi-year progression from 2013 to 2021 of change in the height of the topographic surface and freshwater status of the rooting zone that may indicate impending vegetation transition. Two Surface Elevation Tables (SETs) in a tidal Taxodium distichum swamp at Hickory Point State Forest near Pocomoke City, Maryland were used to collect data on the height of the topographic surface established with respect to a local vertical datum. Annual root production over time was measured by collecting data on ingrowth into mesh root bags. Root bags were collected at 5 set locations within the study area and analyzed to determine the weight in grams of new root production per meter cubed each year. This...

Annual root production over time was measured by collecting data on ingrowth into mesh root bags. The study was conducted on tidal freshwater swamp environments subjected to salinity intrusion at Hickory Point State Forest near Pocomoke City, Maryland. Root bags were collected at 5 set locations within the study area from 2013 to 2021 and analyzed to determine the weight in grams of new root production per meter cubed each year.

An ecological study on mercury contamination in the wetland of West Dongting Lake in China. This study measured the total mercury concentration in the soil and compared it to the measured total concentration of mercury in the above and below ground tissue of different plant species on the floodplain of West Dongting Lake. Bioconcentration, bioaccumulation, and translocation factors were determined for each plant species at the nine study sites. Soil data on mercury concentration as well as moisture and bulk density was collected. Measurements of species richness, evenness and biodiversity were also calculated.
This dataset represents annual reproductive litterfall collections and seedling data from Crawford Tract, Eagle Pond, Section 8 Woods, Deer Pond, Wildcat Bluff, Snake Hole, and Heron Pond from 2006 to 2021. These sites are part of the study location, Buttonland Swamp, within the Cache River Watershed, Illinois. Summer and winter water depths were also included in the dataset.
This dataset contains canopy measurements of Taxodium distichum taken outside of the Wetland and Aquatic Research Center in Lafayette, Louisiana. The measurements were used to produce data on tree canopy area and seeds produced per Taxodium distichum tree.

The original distribution of the study species Physostegia correllii included freshwater floodplains of large rivers in the southcentral U.S. (Colorado, Rio Grande, Mississippi). Experiments to determine the effects of shading on P. correllii were conducted using short-term shade cloth treatments (full sunlight vs. 30% shading for 2-3 weeks). Mean height and cover responses of individuals were determined in conservation gardens located in Lafayette, Louisiana. Physostegia correllii plants were grown in shaded environments for 2.5 weeks.
