Habitat use, diet, prey availability and foraging ecology of the endangered Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus semotus, Vespertilionidae), was examined in the east Maui region inclusive of the Waihou Mitigation Area, Pu‘u Makua Restoration Area and the wind power facility operated by Auwahi Wind Energy, LLC. Research funding to study bat ecology was provided by Auwahi Wind Energy, LLC in order to fulfill requirements for mitigating bat fatalities under it's approved incidental take permit. This study included the first genetic analysis of Hawaiian hoary bat diet items, and broadly confirms the major arthropod orders (Coleoptera, Lepidoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, and Blattodea) found in previous microscopy-based...

This data set provides the locations and corresponding elevations where insect collection, acoustic recording, or Hawaiian hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus semotus) captures occurred as part of a study of bat activity, diet, and prey availability in the Waihou Mitigation Area, Maui. To fulfill requirements for mitigating bat fatalities under it's approved incidental take permit, Auwahi Wind Energy LLC (Auwahi Wind) provided funding for research of Hawaiian hoary bat ecology. Data from this study were collected to assess bat habitat use, diet, prey availability and foraging ecology in a restoration area created for bat habitat mitigation. We surveyed bat acoustic activity and foraging activity over a three-year period...

‘Ōpe‘ape‘a (Hawaiian hoary bats; Lasiurus semotus) were surveyed at 23 sites on Hawaiʻi Island from 33 to 2,341 m elevation from May 2018 to August 2021. Of the 23 sites, 8 were established as fixed survey sites for sampling at repeated intervals from January 2019 through January 2021. We surveyed each fixed site at least once per four-month period (January–April, May–August, September–December), with a survey comprising one to three netting events. Additional opportunistic surveys were conducted at alternate sites or on alternate dates. We captured 138 unique bats (37 female, 101 male) and recaptured 10 bats over 224 mist-netting events. Of the total 148 captured bats we affixed 131 with radio transmitters and...
