The Highly Altered Areas Mask is an input of the Midwest Landscape Initiative’s (MLI) 2023 Midwest Conservation Blueprint. The Blueprint is a basemap of priority lands and waters for conservation across the Midwest consisting of over 20 social and environmental values representing diverse interests across society. For all of our input indicator layers, we use this mask to remove the most highly altered areas on the landscape from our datasets. These areas include the highest-intensity urban development, plus large roads. By removing these select areas, we help the prioritization algorithm of the Blueprint to de-prioritize pixels at the edges of the most altered areas, which in turn leads to more connected hubs in...

The 2023 Midwest Conservation Blueprint is a basemap of priority lands and waters for conservation in the Midwest. It consists of over 20 social and environmental values that represent diverse interests across society. It guides the realization of a thriving landscape of healthy lands and waters supporting wildlife, fish, and plants, embraced by all who live, work, and recreate in the Midwest. Specifically, it serves as an invitation to all those in the Midwest to better coordinate voluntary conservation actions and investments across the region by focusing and aligning conservation work across jurisdictions, attracting and directing funding sources for conservation, and connecting with conservation partners and...

This zipped folder contains the primary spatial data inputs, development process report, code, and primary outputs for the Midwest Conservation Blueprint 2023.
The Combined Zonation Results is an output of the prioritization process of the Midwest Landscape Initiative’s (MLI) 2023 Midwest Conservation Blueprint. The Blueprint is a basemap of priority lands and waters for conservation across the Midwest consisting of over 20 social and environmental values representing diverse interests across society. We synthesize these input datasets in the spatial prioritization software Zonation v5. Each input data set corresponds to a targetable, important feature that represents at least one ecological or societal priority on the landscape. The output of the prioritization analysis seen in this layer is a representation of the priority of each pixel, ranked from a value of 0 to 1,...

The Midwest Conservation Blueprint Ecoregions are an input for the Midwest Landscape Initiative’s (MLI) 2023 Midwest Conservation Blueprint. Before calculating the regional priority areas for conservation, we stratify the Midwest Landscape into Ecoregions. This polygon layer contains the spatial boundaries of the ecoregions used for the stratification. Breaking down the Midwest Landscape into Ecoregions reduces processing time of our spatial planning software and ensures a fairer comparison of indicators across an ecologically diverse region. By stratifying the landscape, each map pixel will only be compared and prioritized in relation to other pixels of the same ecosystem type. Ecoregional boundaries are based...
Natural Assets is an input of the Midwest Landscape Initiative’s (MLI) 2023 Midwest Conservation Blueprint. The Blueprint is a basemap of priority lands and waters for conservation across the Midwest consisting of over 20 social and environmental values representing diverse interests across society. For our low-resolution indicators, we use this layer to emphasize natural assets within the indicator data. Any dataset with a coarser resolution than 30m pixels was considered to be low-resolution. This input layer originates from the LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type layer, the National Conservation Easement Database, and the Protected Areas Database. To create this layer, MLI partners, members, and staff completed...
