This is the R code that was implemented to tidy the original 1994 MBM-AK SEAK bird density dataset (“1994_SEAK_BirdDensities.csv”), producing the final dataset “1994_SEAK_BirdDensities_tidy.csv”. In doing so, the original dataset was reshaped so that all species and bird densities were located in two distinct columns.

Original Southeast Alaska Marine Bird and Sea Otter Survey Paradox Files

This is a collection of the original Paradox files produced during the 1994 MBM-AK SEAK survey. Paradox is an outdated relational database program that is now obsolete. Therefore, most of the individual files and sidecar files contained within this collection cannot be further described because we are not able to view them at this time. Southeast Alaska Marine Bird and Otter Survey Transect Midpoints GeoJSON

This is the GeoJSON file that contains the 1994 MBM-AK SEAK transect midpoints. Its projection is WGS84 (EPSG: 4326) and it was generated from the original midpoints shapefile (‘Transect_Midpoints’) using R code. With the exception of reprojecting this file to WGS84 (ESPG: 4326), no other modifications were made to this spatial extent. It is critical to note that the location of transect midpoints found in this GeoJSON file need to be ground-truthed, as the projection used when producing the transect midpoint shapefile may have varied from the projection used when producing the original transect midpoint data during the 1994 SEAK survey.

Southeast Alaska Marine Bird and Sea Otter Survey

During June and July 1994, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Nongame Migratory Bird Management (MBM-AK) and the Southeast Alaska Ecological Services Field Office conducted a shipboard survey of Southeast Alaska (SEAK) to estimate population abundance and distribution of marine birds and sea otters. Southeast Alaska Seabird and Sea Otter Survey Transect Midpoints Shapefile

This is the shapefile folder that contains the shapefile (.shp) and corresponding sidecar files (.dbf, .prj, .sbn, .sbx, .xml, .shx) that produce the spatial extent of 1994 MBM-AK SEAK transect midpoints. Because all original transect data for this survey were lost, Elizabeth Labunski generated this in 2004 from the “Transects_Surveyed” shapefile she created using old Atlas GIS files and a hard copy map of transects pertaining to the 1994 SEAK survey. Southeast Alaska Seabird and Sea Otter Survey Bird Densities 1994

This is the tidied dataset containing the bird densities by transect; these densities were based on observations made by MBM-AK employees during the 1994 SEAK survey. This file was produced from the original bird density dataset, “1994_SEAK_BirdDensities.csv” using R code (“1994_SEAK_tidyCode.R”). Densities are in birds per square kilometer for each transect. Finally, the densities corresponding to AMRO (American Robin) and BANS (Bank Swallow) do not appear to be calculated correctly and should be disregarded until an explanation for their reported densities can be found.

These data include the transect survey IDs; latitudes and longitude (decimal degrees) of transect midpoints; transect lengths; and transect areas of the 1994 MBM-AK SEAK survey. The transect locations were regenerated by Elizabeth Labunski in 2004 after all original transect location data were lost. She did so through the use of old Atlas GIS files and a hardcopy map of transects pertaining to the 1994 SEAK survey. Southeast Alaska Seabird and Sea Otter Survey Headersheet Codes

This document serves as a data dictionary for specific headersheet codes that were used during the MBM-AK 1994 SEAK survey. This headersheet and corresponding definitions was provided by Elizabeth Labunski in summer 2021. It doesn’t contain all headers and codes used during data collection in 1994. However, this data dictionary was likely used during other Seabirds Department surveys within the same general timeframe and was therefore deemed necessary to archive.

These data were produced during the MBM-AK 1994 SEAK survey. This dataset details bird counts and their behaviors exhibited when observed along a transect during the SEAK survey. Original Southeast Alaska Marine Bird and Sea Otter Survey Bird Densities

This is the dataset containing the bird densities by transect; these densities were based on observations made by MBM-AK employees during the 1994 SEAK survey.
