In 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) assessed the potential for undiscovered, technically recoverable continuous (unconventional) oil and gas resources in the Mowry Shale in the Wind River Basin Province (Finn and others, 2021). To better characterize the source rock potential of the Mowry Shale and associated strata, 129 samples were collected from 45 wells from the well cuttings collection stored at the USGS Core Research Center in Lakewood, Colorado. The sampled wells are located along the margins of the basin in order to obtain samples that were not subjected to the effects of deep burial and subsequent organic carbon loss due to thermal maturation (Daly and Edman, 1987) (fig. 1). One hundred samples are...

These data are microanalyses of 91 polished thin sections that were examined using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) to identify minerals and observe their relationships at high magnification. Samples are from the Triassic Chinle and Jurassic Morrison Formations and adjacent units, which are the main hosts for sandstone-hosted uranium-vanadium deposits in the Colorado Plateau region. The samples were collected in 2019, 2020, and 2021 from mine dumps and surface mineralized rock at deposits throughout the Colorado Plateau in Utah and Colorado. Samples from New Mexico were from archival drill core and outcropping mineralized rock collected by Alexandra Pearce...

The Upper Cretaceous Eagle Ford Group in southwest Texas represents a geologic record of the Cenomanian-Turonian period in the southern Western Interior Seaway (WIS) of North America prior to and during the Oceanic Anoxic Event 2 (OAE-2). Geochemical data generated and compiled here were collected on core samples taken from a wellbore near Del Rio, TX for the purpose of better characterizing the properties and variability within the Eagle Ford Group, an important and prolific petroleum source rock unit. The data have been integrated with sedimentological observations to characterize paleoenvironmental conditions at the southern WIS before and during OAE-2 (French et al., 2024).

In 2019 the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) quantitively assessed the potential for undiscovered, technically recoverable continuous (unconventional) oil and gas resources in the Niobrara interval of the Cody Shale in the Bighorn Basin Province (Finn and others, 2019). Leading up to the assessment, in 2017, the USGS collected samples from the Niobrara and underlying Sage Breaks intervals (Finn, 2019) to better characterize the source rock potential of the Niobrara interval. Eighty-two samples from 31 wells were collected from the well cuttings collection stored at the USGS Core Research Center in Lakewood, Colorado. The selected wells are located near the outcrop belt along the shallow margins of the basin to obtain...
This data release is a compilation of vitrinite reflectance (Ro) data from the Southwestern Wyoming Province in Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah. The data includes about 1,200 Ro measurements from wells drilled for oil and gas exploration and production, coal test holes, and outcrop sections.

The Candy Lane 1 (CL-1) core was acquired in November 2005 as part of a multidisciplinary effort by the U.S. Geological Survey, the Bureau of Land Management, and the Bureau of Reclamation to investigate the Mancos Shale in the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area, Montrose County, Colorado. The Upper Cretaceous Mancos core was taken from the NE 1/4 sec. 8, T. 50 N., R. 9 W. corresponding to approximately lat 38.61717° N., long 107.90174° W. The CL-1 core contains part of the lower portion of the Mancos Shale Formation; Mancos Formation members in ascending order include the Bridge Creek Limestone (partial), Fairport, Blue Hill, Juana Lopez, Montezuma Valley, and Niobrara (partial). After coring was completed,...
This data release contains data associated with the journal article, “Comparison of δ13C Analyses on Individual Foraminifer (Orbulina universa) Shells by Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and Gas-Source Mass Spectrometry”. Data tables are comprised of stable carbon isotope (δ13C) measurements of planktic foraminifer (Orbulina universa) shells measured by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and conventional gas-source mass spectrometry (GSMS). The data release also includes the R code used for statistical analysis and figure generation, as well as scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of O. universa shells taken before and after SIMS analysis.

This compilation presents total organic carbon and pyrolysis analysis data for the Pierre Shale, Niobrara Formation, and other Cretaceous marine shales in the Raton Basin-Sierra Grande Uplift Province. The data was used to characterize these potential source rock intervals in support of the oil and gas resource assessment in the province. The data was compiled from the publicly available files at the USGS Core Research Center in Lakewood, Colorado and from published literature.

This Data Release contains lanthanide (i.e., rare earth element, REE), yttrium (Y), and scandium (Sc) concentrations for oil shales and kerogens isolated from those presented in the associated journal article "Role of Organic Matter and Thermal Maturation in Rare Earth Element Partitioning in the Middle Devonian Sequence of the Appalachian Basin". This dataset provides REE content for a diverse range of organic-rich mudstones from around the world with samples from the Cambrian through Eocene Periods.
In 2021 the United States Geological Survey (USGS) sampled the lower part of the Upper Cretaceous Lewis Shale in the eastern part of the Southwestern Wyoming Province to better characterize its petroleum source rock potential for an upcoming resource assessment. Ninety-five samples from 24 wells were collected from well cuttings of the lower part of the Lewis Shale stored at the U.S. Geological Survey Core Research Center in Lakewood, Colorado. The selected wells are located near the shallow margins of the basin to obtain samples that were not subjected to the effects of deep burial and subsequent organic carbon loss due to thermal maturation as described by Daly and Edman (1987) (fig, 1). The sample intervals were...

Forty samples of outcropping rock samples were collected from the Permian Cutler Formation exposed in the Sinbad Valley, Mesa County, Colorado by USGS volunteer Jon Thorson. This sample set includes 13 pairs of co-existing red unaltered and yellow-grey bleached sandstone. The decimal latitude and longitude locations of the sample collection sites are listed in the “All_Rock_Data” worksheet in the accompanying “All_Sinbad_Rocks” workbook. The samples were collected from rocks exposed on the eastern edge of a breached salt-cored anticline within about 1 to 100 meters from an active seep from which sulfurous brines supply water to Salt Creek. The co-existing red/bleached samples were collected within the same stratigraphic...
