The Great Basin Landscape Conservation Cooperative’s (Great Basin LCC) Conservation Planning Atlas (CPA) is a new geospatial portal that allows users to create and share unique mapping products. It incorporates over 1000 spatial data layers related to conservation of the Great Basin’s many natural and cultural resources. The CPA provides managers, researchers and planners from state, federal, local, NGO and private partners a valuable suite of tools for collaborative spatial planning. All of this information is housed in a single website where readers can access regional spatial layers, decision support tools, and Great Basin LCC project information and products. The CPA is one key part in the Great Basin LCC’s...

The Great Basin Landscape Conservation Cooperative (Great Basin LCC) supports conservation research in the areas of natural and cultural resources through its Science and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (S-TEK) program. Since 2011, Great Basin LCC has supported more than 45 such research projects. These projects occur across the entire geographic Great Basin and occasionally into related regions in the western United States. The project datapoints represent centroids based on the the geographic and/or thematic extent of each of these projects based on project boundaries provided by researchers and created by Great Basin LCC staff. For instances of multiple polygon projects, the project points are calculated at...

FY2010In addition to regional Science and Traditional Ecological Knowledge projects that the Great Basin LCC (GBLCC) supports, GBLCC staff lend technical expertise to a range of projects and have contributed to important regional publications on a range of subjects. These publications range in type from textbooks, to management-oriented science and conservation plans, to scientific papers and have covered subjects like wind erosion following fire, soil microbiota response to drought, plant community resilience to invasive species, and alpine plant communities. In many cases these publications form foundations for scientifically-informed management strategies across the Great Basin.

FY2014The Conservation Biology Institute (CBI) will work with the Great Basin to develop a Conservation Planning Atlas (also commonly called gateways) using Data Basin technology (www.databasin.org) to serve the data integration, collaboration and partner engagement needs.Conservation Planning Atlases (CPA) are a customized interface of the Data Basin platform that include special branding, curation of spatial content, direct links to selected sites (e.g., other LCC Conservation Planning Atlas (e.g., nplcc.databasin.org), additional upload capacity if needed, and access to premium analytical tools. The CPA will allow Great Basin LCC staff and stakeholders to integrate spatial information to coordinate and promote...

The Great Basin LCC Conservation Planning Atlas (CPA) brings cloud-based functionality and collaborative features to a geospatial platform for conservation initiatives across the Great Basin. The CPA resides within the Data Basin online platform, allowing users and groups to create unique collaborative mapping products for their projects. Drawing on over 16,000 datasets currently in Data Basin–including high-priority datasets from LANDFIRE, BLM, USGS, and others–users are able to share maps within public or private groups and then to dynamically interact with those products as a group. In addition to the collaborative planning features, the CPA also provides the Great Basin LCC with another platform through which...

The Great Basin Landscape Conservation Cooperative draws on its Steering Committee and Science and Traditional Ecological Knowledge (S-TEK) partners to prioritize and support conservation science across the Great Basin region. Over nine years, GBLCC has distributed $3.3 million in direct funds and leveraged an additional $5.2 million in matching and in-kind contributions to 50 projects including sagebrush modelling under climate scenarios, tribal adaptations to climate change, mapping of wetlands across the region and many more.

Increasing severe drought events occurring across the Colorado Plateau can harm vegetation and create drier and more flammable fuel for wildfire. Researchers supported by this Southwest CASC project will analyze drought indices and satellite data to show how quickly after drought begins that different types of vegetation across the region show signs of health declines and increased flammability. These results will help land managers detect early signs of drought stress in plants and identify areas of high fire-risk to help make decisions and allocate resources in the region. Plants on the Colorado Plateau have adaptations to withstand short dry spells, but recent severe droughts linked to climate change in the...
