The Imiq Hydroclimate Database houses hydrologic, climatologic, and soils data collected in Alaska and Western Canada from the early 1900s to the present. This database unifies and preserves numerous data collections that have, until now, been stored in field notebooks, on desktop computers, as well as in disparate databases. Synthesizing and analyzing the large-scale hydroclimate characteristics of this important climatic region have been made easier with this searchable database. The data, originally collected in a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 relational database, has been migrated to an open source PostgreSQL and PostGIS environment. This project facilitates research within the North Slope science community through improved data sharing and collaboration. This is achieved through the development and implementation of secure data services (SDS) protocols within the North Slope Science Catalog. Implementation included: 1)Determine SDS protocols that will encourage data provider participation. These might include use request, login authorization, prescribed distribution intervals, use agreement and distribution tracking. This Microsoft Access Database contains soil and permafrost stratigraphy for northern Alaska compiled from numerous project data files and reports. The database has main data tables (tbl_) for site (environmental), soil stratigraphy, soil physical data, soil chemical data, soil radiocarbon dates, and vegetation cover. The Site data includes information of location, observers, geomorphology, topography, hydrology, soil summary characteristics, pH and EC, soil classification, and vegetation cover by species. Soil stratigraphy has information on soil texture and ground ice. Soil physical and chemical data includes lab data on bulk density, moisture, carbon, and nitrogen. Federal land managers, non-governmental organizations, and industry have been developing ecological land classifications at regional and landscape-level for Alaska to aid in ecosystem management. An ecoregion map that covers the entire state was produced by Nowacki et al. (2002).
