The Coprates quadrangle lies to the east of the Tharsis volcanic complex and the Noctis Labyrinthus tectonic complex. To the north are the plains of Lunae Planum, to the east the vast patches of chaotic terrain and the large sinuous channels that trend northward into Chryse Planitia. On the southwest is the Thaumasia Fossae region of tectonically deformed cratered terrain, to the southeast, the Argyre Basin, the best preserved of the ancient martian impact basins. The geology of the Corpates quadrangle is dominated by the Valles Marineris chasma system, which stretches in an east-southeast direction for about 2,500 km across the quadrangle. Its maximum width is about 600 km from the north rim of Ophir Chasma to...
The surface of the Moon is heterogeneous. Surface materials are classed on the basis of telescopic observations into units, each having a limited range of topographic and other physical such as albedo, the reflectivity under full-Moon illumination. Such units are considered analogous to the rock-stratigraphic formations of terrestrial geology. By application of the principals of superposition and intersection, these rock units are arranged in order of relative age and grouped into time-stratigraphic units. Following terrestrial convention, the major time-stratigraphic units are designated systems, and their subdivision series; corresponding to these units are periods and epochs of time, respectively (Shoemaker,...
The Grimaldi quadrangle lies at the southwest margin of Oceanus Procellarum about 1000 km east of Orientale, the youngest of the lunar multi-ring basins. The distal ends of the ejecta blanket surrounding the Orientale basin partly cover the western third of the quadrangle. The relatively small, two-ring Grimaldi basin is in the northwest corner of the quadrangle, and the Humorum basin lies about 750 km to the southeast. A vestigal multi-ring basin mostly engulfed by mare appears to control the distribution of terra and mare craters Hansteen and Billy are on a northwest-trending topographic high which represents part of the ring system of this basin. Terra materials of distinctive texture, apparently unrelated to...
