The rugged landscapes of northern Idaho and western Montana support biodiverse ecosystems, and provide a variety of natural resources and services for human communities. However, the benefits provided by these ecosystems may be at risk as changing climate magnifies existing stressors and allows new stressors to emerge. Preparation for and response to these potential changes can be most effectively addressed through multi-stakeholder partnerships, evaluating vulnerability of important resources to climate change, and developing response and preparation strategies for managing key natural resources in a changing world. Scientific information about the risks of climate change to important natural and cultural resources is crucial for developing and implementing climate adaptation plans and management actions. Tools that incorporate both science and expert knowledge on adaptation actions can greatly benefit municipal, regional, and other decision makers, as they develop and implement their adaptation plans. We propose to expand the collaborative, landscape-scale, climate change planning initiated last year to increase management application in the Rocky Mountain region. This vulnerability assessment is an initial science-based effort to identify how and why focal resources (ecosystems, species populations, and ecosystem services) across the Sierra Nevada region are likely to be affected by future climate conditions. This assessment centers on the Sierra Nevada region of California, from foothills to crests, including ten national forests and two national parks. This dataset includes Climatic Water Deficit (CWD) change, average winter (Dec, Jan, Feb) and average spring (Mar, Apr, May) snowpack change, recharge change, and runoff change from Basin Characterization Model (BCM) output using the GFDL and PCM A2 Scenarios in Sierra Nevada California, for 2010-2039, 2040-2069 and 2070-2099. EcoAdapt, in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service and California Landscape Conservation Cooperative (CA LCC) hosted the Adaptation Planning Workshop for the Sierra Nevada in June 2013 in Sacramento, California. The goal of the workshop was to identify management strategies that will help regionally important ecosystems and species adapt to changing climate conditions and to lay the groundwork for adaptation action. Wetlands provide critical services to natural and human communities alike, forming important wildlife habitat, storing and filtering water, sequestering carbon, and offering opportunities for recreation. Unfortunately, not only are these valuable ecosystems understudied compared to others, but they are also among the most sensitive to climate change. EcoAdapt and partners have been conducting a climate change vulnerability and adaptation assessment for focal resources in the Sierra over the past year. We will be showing the final results of these assessments based on the two workshops held in 2013 and additional syntheses by EcoAdapt. Additionally we will be explaining next steps for the project and discussing the broader impacts. Although the geographic focus is the Sierra, the methods and results are relevant to all of California so we encourage folks to participate from other areas!

We propose to facilitate collaborative landscape-scale climate change planning among diverse partnerships in the Rocky Mountains sub-region of the GNLCC. By synthesizing and integrating best-available climate science research and creating a sustained engagement process, we will improve our collective understanding of the climate change vulnerabilities of widely valued natural resources in the GNLCC, help managers develop a menu of options for managing those resources as climate changes, and identify priority science needs for incorporating climate change into natural resource management decisions.
