In this observational pilot study, we worked at the largest existing solar tower facility in the world (Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System - ISEGS) to assess the efficacy of using radar, surveillance video, and insect trapping to monitor animals flying near the towers. During week-long site visits in May and September, we monitored the airspace surrounding towers and observed insects, occasional birds, and bats under a variety of environmental and operational conditions. This dataset consists of raster portable network graphics (png) images of the planned position indicator (ppi) display from a Furuno FR2127 portable radar unit to a maximum range of 1.5 km. A new image is written with each rotation of the...

Aquatic invasive species are often transported between water bodies on boats or boat trailers, thus they are considered one of the primary vectors for new introductions of invasive species to a water body. This data set contains geographic positioning system locational data for boater access points, use data (i.e. recreational, fishing), water quality measurements (e.g. calcium concentrations, pH), risk assessment data, and other physical attributes (i.e. size, elevation) where available within the Columbia and Snake Rivers and throughout the Columbia River Basin. This work builds on an earlier body of work by Wells et al. 2011, Prioritizing Zebra and Quagga Mussel Monitoring in the Columbia River Basin (PDF link...

The Grizzly Bear Recovery Zone (GBRZ) for the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) delineates the area inside the GYE where demographic and habitat criteria were applied, monitored, and evaluated to achieve recovered status of the Yellowstone grizzly bear population. The GBRZ was established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in 1993 as part of the Recovery Plan for grizzly bears in the lower 48 conterminous United States. The recovery zone boundary identifies the known distribution of bears at that time and encompasses seasonal habitats needed to support a recovered population. The GYE recovery zone spans portions of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming and includes parts of 5 National Forests (Beaverhead-Deerlodge,...

The Wind River Indian Reservation is an area encompassing approximately 9,000 square kilometers in northwest Wyoming shared by the Eastern Shoshone and Northern Arapaho tribes of the Native American Indian Nations. The boundary feature was generated by the U.S. Geological Survey to represent the external boundary of the reservation at a scale of 1:500,000.

The grizzly bear distribution boundary represents the estimated geographic extent of occupied range of the Yellowstone grizzly bear population for the period 2004-2018. The distribution boundary was delineated to provide reliable estimations of grizzly bear occupancy throughout time and for use as a monitoring tool in grizzly bear management and conservation. The boundary was delineated by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team (IGBST) using an interpolation method based on grizzly bear telemetry and GPS locations as well as verified observations and signs of grizzly bears inside the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem during 2004 to 2018.

The grizzly bear distribution boundary represents the estimated geographic extent of occupied range of the Yellowstone grizzly bear population for the period 1980-1989. The distribution boundary was delineated to provide reliable estimations of grizzly bear occupancy throughout time and for use as a monitoring tool in grizzly bear management and conservation. The boundary was delineated by the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team (IGBST) using an interpolation method based on grizzly bear telemetry and GPS locations as well as verified observations and signs of grizzly bears inside the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem during 1980 to1989.

This dataset is a compilation of data obtained from the Idaho Department of Water Quality, the Idaho Department of Water Resources, and the Water Quality Portal. The 'SiteID' table catalogues organization-specific identification numbers assigned to each monitoring location.

A series of tools (spreadsheets, a database and a document) to be used in conjunction with the SELDM simulations used in the publication: Stonewall, A.J., and Granato, G.E., 2019, Assessing potential effects of highway and urban runoff on receiving streams in total maximum daily load watersheds in Oregon using the Stochastic Empirical Loading and Dilution Model: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2019-5053, 116 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20195053

This R script can be used to analyze SELDM results. The script is specifically tailored for the SELDM simulations used in the publication: Stonewall, A.J., and Granato, G.E., 2019, Assessing potential effects of highway and urban runoff on receiving streams in total maximum daily load watersheds in Oregon using the Stochastic Empirical Loading and Dilution Model: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2019-5053, 116 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20195053

This dataset is a compilation of data obtained from the Idaho Department of Water Quality, the Idaho Department of Water Resources, and the Water Quality Portal. The 'MonitoringLocation' table stores attribute data for groundwater wells. This table is related to the 'SiteID' table (which lists the variety of names given to each well by different organizations) and the 'Samples' table (which shows each sample associated with a particular well).

Spreadsheet used to calculate Highway Site characteristics (Drainage area, slope and impervious fraction) for the Stochastic Empirical Loading Dilution Model (SELDM) . The spreadsheet was used in conjunction with the SELDM simulations used in the publication: Stonewall, A.J., and Granato, G.E., 2019, Assessing potential effects of highway and urban runoff on receiving streams in total maximum daily load watersheds in Oregon using the Stochastic Empirical Loading and Dilution Model: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2019-5053, 116 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20195053.

Contamination to aquatic resources from co-produced water (brine) associated with energy development has been documented in the northeastern portion of the Williston Basin; an area mantled by glacial drift. The presence and magnitude of brine contamination can be determined using the contamination index (CI) value from water samples. Recently, the U.S. Geological Survey published a section (~2.59 km2) level risk assessment of brine contamination to aquatic resources for Sheridan County, Montana, using oilfield and hydrogeological parameters. Our goal was to improve the Sheridan County assessment (SCA) and evaluate the use of this new Williston Basin assessment (WBA) across 31 counties mantled by glacial drift in...

The US Department of Interior’s (USDI) Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has a long history of soil and vegetation monitoring of public rangelands it manages. However, historical monitoring data have been stored and managed at the field, district, or state level, making them difficult to compile and analyze. BLM’s Soil Vegetation Inventory Method (hereafter SVIM) program occurred between 1977 and 1983 in Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Wyoming. Our objective was to extract and decode vegetation cover data from the SVIM dataset in a georeferenced, digital format. Vegetation cover data are available for 22,578 SVIM site write-up areas in nine states. The wide geographic...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. These data represent the interpretations from borehole electric (resistivity) logs from oil and gas wells and lithologic logs from nearby water wells. These interpretations were used to build the hydrogeologic framework in the Williston structural basin. The resistivity logs were used to identify the hydrogeologic units (fig. 3A of SIR 2014-5047) and to quantify the vertical detailed lithology (thickness of sand, coal, gravel, silt,...
