Fish occurrence data to support high-resolution distribution models and test various community and macroecological hypotheses have not been available at the national scale. We present IchthyMaps, a database of high-quality historical fish occurrences covering fishes of the conterminous United States. Designed on the principles of metacommunity ecology, IchthyMaps is a compilation of presence records from atlases up to 1990, at the resolution of the 1:100,000 National Hydrography Database Plus (NHDPlus) inter-confluence stream segment, readily aggregated into hierarchically coarser units (e.g. hydrologic unit code 8-digit and 12-digit watersheds). IchthyMaps contains about 606,550 presence records for 1,038 species...

The Open Space Institute (OSI) disseminated knowledge and tools across the northeast U.S. and the Canadian Maritimes to advance the application of NA LCC data sets for land conservation. Guidance documents were developed to help organizations build buy-in from their constituents, learn from past applications of the data, and develop strategic planning for conservation. The documents were informed by surveys, field tested and distributed by established leaders in assisting land trusts in conservation planning. Strategic partnerships aligned to help distribute guidance include the Land Trust Alliance, Highstead Foundation, and other select organizations that serve as resource ‘hubs’ for the land conservation community....
This study aids in developing a synergistic ecological-coastal resiliency framework for a significant portion of the coastal habitat on Fire Island. It is envisioned that the study will provide key information on beach restoration, management and conservation actions for other beach dependent species, in addition to the federally-listed piping plover, along the entire south shore barrier island system chain. The three major goals of this project are: (1) Intensive field work monitoring the piping plover population west of the new inlet in the Federal Wilderness Area, thereby greatly increasing the range of habitat conditions that can be assessed for resiliency under both natural processes and coastal stabilization....
This collaborative project provided biologists and managers along the Atlantic coast with tools to predict effects of accelerating sea-level rise on the distribution of piping plover breeding habitat, test those predictions, and feed results back into the modeling framework to improve predictive capabilities. Immediate model results will be used to inform a coast-wide assessment of threats from sea-level rise and related habitat conservation recommendations that can be implemented by land managers and inform recommendations to regulators. Case studies incorporating resilience of piping plover habitat into management plans for specific locations demonstrate potential applications.
Managing invasive species is both a complex spatial problem and a multi-species problem, yet we lack opportunities and tools that address both problems simultaneously. Here, we propose to meet this need through a collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS) to develop a data-driven, multi-species simulation framework; our goal is to test and transfer efficient and effective management strategies that optimize control of aquatic invasive species and promote the persistence of at-risk species in the southwestern U.S. Our target species are the invasive American bullfrog (Lithobates catesbeianus) and an isolated metapopulation of the Arizona treefrog (Hyla wrightorum), a species of conservation concern in Arizona....
