Virtually the entire Pacific population of brant is present at the Izembek Lagoon Complex (Izembek and Kinzarof lagoons, Morshovi and Bechevin bays) from early October through November every year (Reed et al. 1989., Boyd et al. 2013, Lewis et al. 2020) providing an efficient period to estimate abundance. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has conducted low-level (150 feet) aerial ocular surveys of brant to estimate abundance at the Izembek Lagoon Complex during fall since 1975 (Wilson 2019), but bias in visual flock size estimates, species mis-identification in large and mixed-flocks, and disturbance from low-level flights lead to miss or double counting of flocks and can all bias population estimates. Multiple lines of evidence suggest that the Gray-headed Chickadee (Poecile cinctus lathami), a population endemic to Alaska and northwestern Canada, has declined and/or been extirpated from locations where they were considered historically common. In contrast, the Boreal Chickadee, a native congener, has recently colonized locations where Gray-headed Chickadees once occurred.
